Chan took a deep breath, he had reached his house and now it was time to release the terrors that waited for him inside. He pulled his keys out and opened the door. The first thing that he saw when he walked in was his father sitting at the table with his head in his hands. Dang it, he thought, well here goes nothing. He decided to try and sneak past him and hope that he wouldn't notice him. However, as usual, luck was not on his side.
"Chan," his father said as he walked past the table. Chan shrunk a little as he turned to face his father.
"Yeah?"
"Where were you? And why are you wearing those ridiculous clothes again?"Chan looked down at his clothes surprised, agh! I forgot to change! He thought.
"I was at a cafe studying, and Victoria had friends over so she said I couldn't come home until they left," Chan said as he looked at the floor, avoiding eye contact with his father at all costs.
"What?"he heard a voice say, "I would never tell Chan he couldn't come home! He's just making excuses!" Chan turned to look at his older sister.
"What do you mean? I have proo-" he cut himself off as his sister held up his sketchbook with a smirk on her face.
"I mean, yeah, I'm sorry I must have read the text wrong. She probably said to get home as soon as possible. I'm sorry father." Chan looked at his feet again as his thoughts were swirling. Victoria had threatened him with his sketchbook before. She had almost shared all of his darkest secrets with the entire school, just because Chan had made the smallest noise while her friends were over. He knew better now than to make his sister mad. However dangerous it was to get his sister mad though, it was at least twice as dangerous to get his father mad.
"Okay,"his father said, "Just don't do it again." Chan relaxed a little but then his father began speaking again,
"You have to make dinner for all of us and clean up as well. I want the kitchen, dining area, and living room spotless before nine'o'clock,"he looked back at him before going back to his room not waiting for his reply.
"Okay father," Chan replied with his eyes still on the ground. This definitely wasn't the worst punishment he had gotten as he enjoyed cooking and cleaning and it meant that he could listen to his music more. But cooking and cleaning also meant that he couldn't do his homework until those two things were done. He sighed to himself, looks like we're staying up late again tonight, he thought.
"Good job Chan, I didn't think you were capable of making up such a believable story." He heard Victoria's snide voice saying. He turned to face his sister.
"Why would you tell me not to come home if you knew father was coming home today?" Chan said angrily. Victoria just smiled innocently,
"I thought you could work on your improvisation skills a little more. I mean, you were thinking about auditioning for the school play weren't you?" Victoria had the most annoyingly innocent look on her face. It was true that Chan was thinking about auditioning for the play, but only because he thought that it would fit with his character. He decided to just ignore his sister and begin cooking dinner. He opened the refrigerator first to see what kinds of protein they had. He saw one chicken breast, some eggs, and milk. I could make fried rice with mandarin oranges on the side, yeah that sounds good, he thought to himself. As he pulled out the ingredients and began cooking (wElCoMe To ChAn'S kItChEn) he thought back to Felix and their conversation that afternoon. I wonder what made him come over to my table, I don't think I'm very approachable especially when I'm at the cafe. Maybe he just wanted to get to know me? Nah, I don't think anybody in their right mind would want to get to know the crazy guy who sits in the corner all afternoon glued to his laptop. By that time he had finished cutting the chicken, cooked the rice, and had the mixed vegetables and sauce ready. He put the chicken in the pan first with a little bit of olive and sesame oil. Then he added some spices. While he stirred the chicken to get it cooked on all sides he began thinking again. I guess I'll be able to see him tomorrow and I can ask him then, right? After the chicken was cooked he added the vegetables and waited a bit for those to cook before adding the rice. After the rice was well incorporated he added a couple eggs. Then he covered the pan and began setting the table. After he finished setting the table he peeled three mandarin oranges and put one on each plate.
"Time to eat!" he called up the stairs.
"Bring mine to my room," his father called down, "And don't forget my Coke Zero,"
"Okay father," Chan sighed.
"I want mine in my room too!" his sister shouted, "Bring me a Cherry Coke!" Chan took a deep breath and yelled back,
"Okay!"He scooped a good portion of the fried rice onto both his father's and his sister's plates. Then he grabbed a Coke Zero for his father and a Cherry Coke for his sister. When he reached his father's room he knocked on the door and then opened it slowly. He brought the food in and set it with his drink on the bedside table. While he was in there he saw what his father was doing. He had his TV on and was playing a video game with his friends. I wonder if his friends have a wife or any children and if they have to bring him food, he thought to himself. Then he walked to his sister's room. He dropped her food off and looked at what she was doing. She had her computer on her bed and was watching random TikToks. Chan put her food on the table next to her bed. Before he left Victoria turned to him and said,
"I hope that all of your friends are doing good, oh that's right you don't have any!" Victoria laughed like she had just won this huge battle against the strongest person in the world. Chan rolled his eyes as he started to head back to the hallway.
"Oh don't forget to change if you don't want Dad to get more mad." He heard Victoria call after him as he left her room. Chan sighed and went to his room to change. He changed into a pair of light gray sweatpants and a white tshirt. Then he went back down the stairs to eat his dinner. He grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and his phone from his backpack before he sat down to eat. He also found the napkin with Felix's phone number on it. Eh, what harm could it do, he thought as he put the number in his phone and then texted him.
Me:Hey, it's Chan from the cafe.
And from school I guess.
To his surprise Felix texted back almost right away.
A/N:I'm going to have the story set in Australia because I find it easier to think of names for Australians. That also means that I won't be using honorifics or anything else like that. As promised double update today! All of the chapters so far have just been kind of introductory chapters to set the scene for the rest of the book. I hope you enjoyed Chapter four and I'll post the next part next week! Signing out, Blueberrt Muffun :) <3
