Hello everyone!  I'm sorry that this update took a little longer.  My creative juices just weren't flowing this past week.  I'm not thrilled with this chapter but I hope you enjoy it anyway.  The next one should be better (if you call more heartbreak better).  Thank you for reading this mediocre update and I hope you have a great week!  Stay safe all my beautiful souls!

Wei Ying.

Come back.

Wei Ying.

Come back to me.

Those were the only two thoughts that Wangji's weary mind was able to think right now. They were the only thoughts that mattered. He chanted them in his head like a broken mantra, willing his Wei Ying to return to him.

Ten days had passed and still there was no sign of the cocoon releasing his husband. Every hour of every day Lan Zhan tried to break it open. He used Bichen and his guqin at first but, as his spiritual energy weakened from the relentless exertion, he resorted to using his hands and body. He would leap into the air and pound his fists against the surface of the evil entombing his lover until his body refused his commands and his hands were bloody. Now, all he could do was wait. Again.

Lan Zhan sat motionless as if he had been carved into a beautiful jade statue inside the desolate cave. His eyes were half open and vacant as he fought to stay awake. Sleep slowly threatened to pull him under its crushing weight like quicksand. His head bobbed groggily up and down as he fought to remain conscious. He could not lose to it now. At any moment, his husband might return to him and wrap him in his loving embrace. Wangji prayed to any god that would listen to him to bring his Wei Ying back to him so that he could smell his beloved's sweet lotus scent again and feel his warm body next to his. He begged to see his husband's bright smile and hear his lilting voice endlessly tease him.

Lan Zhan.

Hanguang-jun.

Lan Er-gege.

Lan Zhan's heart tightened in his chest at the mere thought that he may never again hear Wei Ying's laugh or feel his soft lips on his. Dry tears burned his eyes as he looked up at the pod and cursed the fates.

Wei Ying.

Come back.

Wei Ying.

I love you.

Lan Zhan's stomach growled more mercilessly as the days passed, demanding to be fed the sustenance it required to keep him alive. But, Wangji refused to move or even take his eyes off his captive soulmate. Clan members, family, and friends came to visit throughout the tortuous days bringing him fresh food and water. None of which he indulged in. His brother even tried to force feed him on the seventh day but, instead, had to settle for transferring some of his spiritual energy to Lan Zhan. Xichen could see Wangji's eyes losing their brightness but he was helpless to ease his little brother's suffering.

On the twelfth day, Lan Zhan's body finally gave out and he collapsed in exhaustion and hunger in the middle of the night. There were no dreams, no nightmares, no anything. Just a blissful oblivion that enveloped him like a warm blanket.

When he woke, his body was stiff and his muscles screamed at every small movement he took as he attempted to stand. His eyes hurt and his head felt heavy like it had been stuffed full of rocks. He looked around the cave, confused as to where he was and how long he had been there. Slowly, recognition dawned on him and he frantically looked for the cocoon his husband was trapped in. However, the cave was unusually dark. Darker than he remembered it being before he fell asleep. His eyes could barely see any details of his surroundings.
