I hope you enjoy this one! Stay safe!
"Wha-what do you mean dad wants to kill me?!" Lan Sizhui cried out. "Wh-why would he want to do that, father?!" Sizhui's eyes stung with tears of betrayal as they searched Lan Zhan's unworried face for an explanation. His hands held Wangji's arms tightly, his delicate fingers digging farther into his father's skin the longer the silence persisted between them.
Lan Zhan took his son's fearful face into his hands and brought their foreheads together. It was a loving gesture the two had done every night before bed when Sizhui was still a child. A-Yuan would always grab onto Wangji's long hair and hold it tight in his tiny fists until he fell asleep in his father's safe arms. Lan Zhan would then place a feather-like kiss on Sizhui's small nose before drifting off to sleep himself, praying that their Wei Ying would return to them one day.
"A-Yuan. Your dad would never harm a hair on your head. The resentful energy is twisting his emotions, toying with them, making him do things he would never do. The Yin Iron in his headband is amplifying the power of the dark energy." Wangji elaborated, his voice calm and his face serene.
Sizhui swallowed and closed his eyes for a few seconds. When they opened, Wangji saw his own strong determination reflected back at him in his son's beautiful brown eyes. His heart filled with admiration for A-Yuan's unrelenting strength.
"How do we save him?" A-Yuan demanded with a voice that sounded like it should have come from a clan elder, not a young man in his early twenties. He released his grip on his father and stood tall in front of the man who raised him. Wangji responded with an honest smile and a hand on Sizhui's broad shoulder.
"In Mo Xuanyu's body, your dad had a small, underdeveloped core that he was trying to strengthen over the past few years. We knew it would never be as powerful as his own birth core but your dad refused to give up and worked every day to enhance his core. When Wei Ying was consumed by the resentful energy, your uncle Xichen sensed that Wei's core was mutating into a demonic one."
Sizhui's face showed that he was following Lan Zhan's way of thinking. "But, it would have been a weak demonic core because of Mo Xuanyu's weak golden core. So, the Yiling Laozu is not yet at his strongest. He's still strengthening his demonic core!"
"Yes." Wangji agreed proudly.
"We need to get to dad now and stop him while the Yiling Laozu is still weak! Then we can save him and bring him home!" Sizhui shouted hopefully.
Lan Zhan turned away from his son and picked up Bichen. "If Wei Ying's golden core could be turned into a demonic one, then I believe it can be changed back. As long as there is a spark of golden core remaining, we have a chance to bring him back to us. We just have to reach him beneath all the resentful energy. He has to keep fighting. WE have to keep fighting for HIM. He has to know that we won't give up on him, no matter what happens or what the Yiling Laozu makes him do."
Sizhui quickly followed Lan Zhan out of Jingshi ready to save his dad. But, before the two men could even leave the open gateway of the property, Lan Xichen met them with a look of dread that he did a miserable job of concealing.
"Brother, what.....?" Lan Zhan's chest tightened as Xichen walked up to him and took his hand in his.
"It's Wei Ying. He......" Xichen looked at Sizhui and then back to Wangji. "You need to come with me, Wangji. A-Yuan you......."
