"Wei Ying? What are you doing?" Lan Zhan shouted in horror. His hands reached for the squirming bunny in Wei's hand, snatching it away from its impending demise.
"What do you mean, Lan Zhan? I'm just making dinner." Wei responded smartly. Then, he sighed heavily and whined, "I'm so damn tired of your Gusu Lan's tasteless dishes." His eyes rolled in his head before settling on Wangji holding the rabbit. "I thought tonight I would make you one of my favorite meals. I promise not to add a lot of spice to yours so that your tongue won't get burned. I'll need that to work its magic later." Wei Ying said slyly with a hard wink.
Lan Zhan stared at his husband in complete disbelief. "Wei Ying, you know killing is forbidden in Cloud Recesses. And.......it's Wuji. He's one of ours."
"That's Wuji? How can you even tell, Lan Zhan? They all look alike to me." Wei Ying admitted as he stood shrugging his shoulders. Lan Zhan's expression froze. "Besides," Wei Ying continued casually. "It's only one. I didn't think you'd miss one little ball of fluff. There are so many now." He tried reaching for the rabbit to take it back from Lan Zhan but Wangji turned away from him, protecting the small creature with his body. Wei Ying huffed and placed his hands on his hips.
"Lan Zhan, come on. Just one, please?" Wei Ying pleaded, his voice going higher on the 'please'. When he realized that his husband was not going to indulge him, Wei shook his head and pouted like a spoiled child.
"Fine, you win, Hanguang-jun." Wuxian held his hands up in surrender and took one step back. Lan Zhan waited a moment, eyeing his husband cautiously, before he slowly bent to release the rabbit. But, before Wangji realized what was happening, Wei Ying swooped in and snatched the terrified rabbit right out of his arms.
"Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan scolded as he tried to rescue the fur ball from Wuxian's clutches. But, Wei Ying was already holding the knife to the rabbit's throat. Wangji stopped instantly, not wanting to provoke Wei Ying into following through with his threat. He stared into his husband's eyes and once again saw almost unnoticeable sparks of red mixed with the silver orbs. But they were there.
"Wei Ying. Please. Don't do this." Wangji's voice broke. He knew that not only was the rabbit's life in danger, so was his Wei Ying's. If his husband took the life of this innocent animal that he cherished, Lan Zhan feared that his hope of saving his Wei Ying would die along with it.
Wei gazed into the small animal's terrified eyes as he pushed the knife against its delicate skin. In them, his saw own reflection staring back at him. A reflection of someone that haunted him. Suddenly, his mind was thrown back to a time when he and Lan Zhan had laid amongst the rabbits and played with them for an entire afternoon. He remembered giggling every time their long whiskers tickled his skin and how Lan Zhan would cuddle with five at a time because he could not say no to their adorable faces.
