Nie Huiasang sat in the only garden of his clan's home, the Unclean Realm. He had constructed this place after he had avenged the death of his half-brother, Nie Minghue. The Nie Clan, having been founded by butchers, was not known for its love of nature and beauty. However, Huiasang was not like his predecessors, men forged in war and born from blood. Instead, he was a man of intelligence who loved the arts.
This morning, he was lovingly handfeeding the nightingale he had raised since finding it as an orphaned fledgling two years ago. The bird perched calmly on his arm, gobbling down the tiny pieces of fruit Huiasang had cut for it and offered on his open palm.
"You like the apple the best, don't you, Ming. Do you know how difficult it is to find fresh fruits this time of year?" he complained as he delicately ran his pointer finger down the birds greyish colored feathers on its back. "But that's okay. Anything for my little Ming." Nie cooed.
The tiny bird raised its head up to show off its brightly colored orange and red throat plumage and looked at the man feeding him with its black eyes.
Huiasang scratched the songbird's neck with the tip of his pinky finger and begged, "Sing for me, Ming. Please? I haven't heard you sing in so long."
Immediately, Nie Huiasang heard beautiful high-pitched notes floating on the air. He looked down at the bird and realized that the tiny creature's beak was closed. As he listened to the faint notes, their sound grew distinct and clear. Nie's heart skipped a beat and then another as he slowly looked toward the archway at the garden's entrance. Above him, the sky paled, the bright winter sun fading behind an unnatural darkness.
