Hello everyone! I must say, this is the first chapter that I have written that actually made me sob ugly tears. I don't know why. I feel like I've written scenes just as emotional but, for some reason, this one hit me hard. There is now a pile of tissues sitting next to my laptop. I have proofread it several times before downloading it but I still feel it could be better. However, I wanted to keep my promise to you about updating every day this week. This will, unfortunately, be my last update for a few days. I will keep working on the next chapter but I won't have as much time to devote to it right now so I'll upload it when I feel it is worthy of your love.
Thank you to everyone who has and is supporting my work. Please vote or comment after you are done reading. Votes are appreciated but comments are the best! Reminder that this work is complete fiction based on someone else's characters and the art and photos are definitely not mine (I suck at drawing stick people!).
Lan Zhan's steps were slow and heavy. His heart in turmoil. His mind spinning.
'What just happened? We were so happy yesterday. This whole week has been nothing but never-ending joy for us. Wei Ying smiled every day and laughed every hour. Tonight......tonight was a nightmare. Does he really hate me that much? Am I so wrong to want him all to myself? Why do I get so angry whenever someone touches him even in an innocent way? I know Wei Ying loves me and would never leave me. But.......now........what if?'
Lan Zhan walked for hours around Cloud Recesses back mountains. It was past 9 o'clock and there was no one else awake to question his odd behavior. As his steps became clumsy from exhaustion, he found himself standing in front of the door to the one person whom he could confide in. The one person who would comfort him. The one person who knew him better than himself. The one person he hoped could help him.
"Wangji?" Xichen said sleepily sliding his door open. "What are you doing here at this late hour?"
Lan Zhan could not answer his brother without breaking down in front of him so he just stood there, unmoving. Xichen could see the pain on his baby brother's face and silently welcomed him inside. The two siblings stood staring at each other hoping the other would speak first. But, when Xichen remained silent, Lan Zhan knew he would have to be the one to surrender first.
"We had a fight." Lan Zhan said blankly, his eyes pleading with his brother for unspoken help.
"I see. What did you fight about?"
Unable to support his own weight anymore, Lan Zhan walked over and sat down by the table. His shoulders slumped and his head lowered. Lan Xichen's heart went out to his younger brother who looked like he had just fought a war and lost.
After lighting a few candles, he moved and sat next to Lan Zhan, lightly putting his arm around him. They sat like that for many minutes. Lan Huan could feel the irregularity in Wangji's breathing but still sat wordlessly. Finally, Xichen realized that his brother would need a little more coaxing before he would give in to his pain.
"Wangji, how long have you been walking?" Now that he was fully awake, Lan Xichen could see the caked dirt at the bottom of Lan Zhan's robes. His eyes moved up and rested on his brothers agonized face which kept staring straight ahead. The dancing candlelight on Lan Zhan's jade colored skin made his sorrow even more excruciating to look at.
"Wangji. I can't help you if I don't know what happened." Xichen said softly. He took Lan Zhan's cold hand in his and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "I'm sure Wei Wuxian is sorry for whatever happened between the two of you. Now that you have both had time to calm down, you should go and talk to him."
