Ever since Sora woke up on this strange island, she was always disturbed with the fact that all her memories were gone. But even when she couldn't remember, she was in no real danger, and her classmates encouraged her to remember at her own pace.
When she had first arrived with her new classmates, a strange bird introducing itself as Monocrow called them to Utsuroshima Park and announced itself as their teacher. He had also said that because of a 'tragedy' in the modern world, they were to remain on this island, Utsuroshima, for an indefinite period of time to preserve the hopes of the next generation...whatever that meant.
She and her sixteen new classmates had been living on Utsuroshima, an island consisting of five different islands, for a week now, and they were encouraged to become close by their teacher. Monocrow had even planned scavenging activities and projects for them to do, claiming that it was for the sake of building bonds.
Sora waited on the second island impatiently at the Kurokawa Shrine, though she tried not to show it. She had asked Yuki to partner with her for scavenging materials and he had agreed, but now he was late to their agreed-upon meeting time. She checked her handbook again, wondering if she should send a message or just start without him.
As it turned out, she didn't need to as Yuki came stumbling to the shrine, his face flushed as he gasped for air. "Ah, there you are. Where were you?" The albino asked, concerned about his complexion.
"T-Take the long way around, Big Bro said... It'll be good for your health, Big Bro said..." The lucky student panted. "Told me to...climb the mountain."
"Oh, I caught you in the middle of exercising." Sora chuckled. "Well, we should get started on collecting resources. Do you want to search inside of the shrine first? You look like you need the shade."
"Y-Yeah... Thank you." Yuki wearily smiled as the girl led him into the shrine. Sora looked back at him with a smile of her own, stretching her hand out to offer him help. He accepted it and walked into the Kurokawa Shrine with her.
Inside, the room was covered wall-to-wall with religious items and symbols. A statue with a large number of unlit candles surrounding it rested behind a mat for worshippers to kneel at. Yuki sat down at the mat not to worship, but for comfort from the wooden floor, and Sora decided to sit beside him.
"Hm, you think Monocrow would let us melt down some of the statues or steal a candle or two? They might come in handy for any future projects." Sora suggested. "I mean, it's not like they've been used. I haven't seen anyone come in to pray yet."
"The candles probably haven't been used to avoid a fire hazard in a mostly-unused wooden building. And Monocrow probably wouldn't let us melt anything in the first place. He'd probably scold us for even trying." Yuki chuckled. "Hey, Sora, are you religious?"
"No, I'm an atheist...I think." The albino replied with a shrug. "I'm not sure if I was before I got amnesia, but I know I'm not now."
"Oh, so that's what you think, haha..." The lucky student felt a wave of awkwardness wash over him. "Well, even if you don't know what you were like in the past, at least you know yourself now!"
Sora was silent for a few seconds before sighing. "Yuki, do you ever think I'll get my memories back?" She asked. "It's been on my mind for a long time, and though I'm happy with how my life is right now, it's like I was born on this island with no influences from the outside world. 'Sora' isn't even my real name, it's only a placeholder...what do you think?"
"...I can't answer that for you. I don't know that myself." Yuki confessed, putting his hand on her shoulder. "All I know is that you have the power to make your own choices now. After all, you don't have any past regrets or dreams tying you down now, so you can make some new ones for yourself."
The white-haired girl blinked in disbelief before smiling again. "Yeah, you're right...except maybe the regrets part." She joked. "Thanks, Yuki, I really needed to hear that."
"A-Anytime!" The ginger smiled, putting his hand behind his head and scratching bashfully.
The two of them were so focused on each other that they didn't notice anyone coming up behind them. "What the you two doing, goofing off like that?" They asked.
Yuki whirled around with an alarmed expression on his face. "Ahh!" He yelped, then realized who it was. "Jeez, Utsuro, at least make your presence known before you sneak up me like that!"
"Heh, all these years and you still get scared by your twin?" Sora teased, making Yuki's face heat up from embarrassment.
"More importantly, aren't you two supposed to be collecting materials right now? You two agreed that you were doing that today." Utsuro reminded. "You shouldn't be slacking off right now."
"Come on, killjoy, isn't having fun what this trip's all about?" The albino let out a breathy giggle. "Fine then, emo boy. We should get back to investigating, Yuki. Let's check the shrine for any materials." She stood up from the mat, helping Yuki to his feet.
"O-Okay!" He agreed, ignoring the huff from the other ginger behind him.
