Reconnecting - Chapter 32

Diluc POV

It's been weeks since y/n has left... but it feels a lot longer. Every second feels like minutes, every minute feels like hours, and hours feel like days... it gets harder and harder not being with her... I keep looking at that drawing Fumiko gave me, it's my reminder of what I did. A reminder that monsters don't get to be happy. I hear someone knock at the door. I tell them to come in and see Kaeya there. Of all people why him?!

Diluc: what do you want Kaeya?!
Kaeya: umm listen... people are getting worried about you. No one has seen you leave the study other then to eat for a matter of weeks
Diluc: get to the point!
Kaeya: I just wanted to see if you were ok...
Diluc: as you can see, I'm fine
Kaeya: well all that I see is a man, who can't look after himself
Diluc: how are you expecting this conversation to go Kaeya?! Are you expecting me to pretend everything is ok when it's not?! Want me to call you brother again?! What do you want?!
Kaeya: what I want... is for you to be safe... just try to move on... I know she meant a lot to you... but sitting here feeling sorry for yourself isn't going to bring her back
Diluc: you have no idea what it's like!
Kaeya: no idea? No idea?! Have you forgotten we both lost the same father?!
Diluc: yeah! And what did you do about it?!
Kaeya: ...that is not fair Diluc...
Diluc: if you helped him! He could still be here!
Kaeya: don't you dare put the blame on me! I know you have been angry with me about that for a long time! But I couldn't get there in time!
Diluc: and what happened when you did arrive?!
Kaeya: ... Diluc I-
Diluc: you stood there and watched like a coward!
Kaeya: there wasn't anything I could have done!
Diluc: you didn't even try!
Kaeya: listen! I'm sorry! I'm sorry I wasn't there! I'm sorry I wasn't a better son! And I'm sorry I wasn't a better brother! But we only have each other now Diluc! Come find me when you wake up and realise that!

Kaeya storms out. Diluc stares down at his desk and slides all his documents off in rage. Diluc was annoyed at him self for being the way he was with Kaeya. He regretted speaking to him like that. Diluc sits at his desk for a while. Later Diluc arrives outside a room. He knocks on the door, when it opens it reveals to be Kaeya

Kaeya: What do you want?
Diluc: ... I'm sorry... I shouldn't have put the blame on you... and you're right... you are all I have left... you... you are my brother... and I could really use a brother right now...
Kaeya: ... come in
Diluc: ... thanks

Diluc goes into the room. Kaeya sits down on a chair and gestures for Diluc to sit down on a different one. Diluc slowly sits down

Kaeya: so... what changed your mind?
Diluc: I thought about what you said... and I know dad wouldn't have wanted this... and I know that it wasn't your fault... I just chose to quickly blame you... it seemed like the easy option I suppose
Kaeya: let's just forget about it ok? Let's just pretend that nothing bad happened between us
Diluc: I'd like that...
Kaeya: ... do you want to talk about y/n?
Diluc: ....I really screwed up Kaeya... I keep seeing her face... she was so broken... and it was my fault
Kaeya: hey, it wasn't your fault! You did what you had to, to keep her safe... you did the right thing
Diluc: well the "right thing" is shit
Kaeya: yeah... I know
Diluc: If I could just find out if she found happiness, I might be able to move on... but if she isn't... I'm not sure I ever will...
Kaeya: ...then I'll help you get through it

Diluc starts to tear up

Diluc: h-how?! After all these years I ignored you. Why do you still keep trying?!
Kaeya: because you're my brother Diluc? Haven't I been saying that this whole time?

Diluc can't hold back his tears, and cries, he holds on his thighs tightly, trying to hold in his anger. Kaeya gets out of his seat and walks over to Diluc, giving him a comforting hug. Diluc quickly hugs Kaeya back. He couldn't hold back his emotions anymore.

Kaeya: you know? There might be a way for us to check on her?

Diluc looks up at Kaeya. Later they appear at Wangshu Inn at the waypoint on the balcony. They walk down the stairs to the desk asking about Xiao. Before she can say anything, Xiao walks up behind them both

Xiao: why are you both here?
Diluc: listen... you are the only one that can have contact with y/n. Can you please tell me she is ok?
Xiao: I don't know what you are talking about
Kaeya: don't lie to us Xiao. We know you can hear her. We saw you the day she went through your portal
Xiao: I can only hear her when she is in need of help. When she is begging to be saved. So if you are asking if I heard anything since? I haven't

He is about to walk away

Diluc: wait! There must be a way you can see how she is... please... I just need to know she is ok...
Xiao: ...I'm sorry... I really am... I wish I could help...
Kaeya: what about Zhongli or Venti? Could they help?
Xiao: I'm not sure... but I highly doubt it... I was part of the Yakshas. We were gifted or in some cases cursed with different abilities... I don't know why I can hear y/n's cries, she isn't in this world, and she never addressed me by name.
Kaeya: it might be worth talking to Zhongli... he might be able to at least come up with an idea for what we can do
Diluc: thanks anyways Xiao...

Kaeya and Diluc head back upstairs towards the balcony waypoint. Behind the corner Fumiko is seen listening in. She smirks. She is pleased with the information she gathered from their conversation.
