Charlie's View

No one dares to speak, everybody is quiet, looking at each other, well, basically my parents looking at Dylan who is now like a statue. I know he looks like he's about to shit his pants. If looks could kill, my mom would be a murderer right now.

This must be the worst meet-the-boyfriend ever. We got caught by my parents dry humping each other in the kitchen and it was embarrassing.

"So," My dad starts, finally breaking the silence, and we all look at him.

"Charlie is this man your boyfriend?" Dad said casually eating his food.

"Uh, yes, he is. He goes to the same school as I am."

My dad nods understanding, but my mom is like a device scanning Dylan from head to toe. It's very obvious by the way she's looking at him, squinting her eyes.

"I wanna say nice to meet you, but given what happened earlier I don't think it's a good way to meet your girlfriend's parents, is it?"

Dad said addressing Dylan. Dylan nods in agreement, embarrassment visible on his face.

"Yes, I do apologize about before. I really want to meet you guys, and this is not what I had in mind on how it's gonna go. "

"I get that it's embarrassing, but you're kids, hormones are kicking in, it's understandable. Let's look on the bright side of it, at least we met you."

Dad said, giving Dylan a small smile to which Dylan replied with a sheepish one.

"Perhaps, not quiet, honey."

My mom finally starts, butting into the conversation, mainly focusing on Dylan. She narrows her eyes towards him, and I felt disappointed and annoyed as to how she's acting towards him right now. This is what I don't want to happen, but I kinda know it's coming.

"Say, what do your parents do for a living?"

"Business, but I don't live with them anymore."

"What do you mean about that?"

"I live by myself, well, I live in my friend's apartment."

"So you're saying is that you finance yourself? How are you doing that?"

"I am a varsity player at school, so 100% of my tuition is getting paid by the school. In terms of the money, I do one or two works every weekend in my friend's diner. It helps here and there."

I look at him, surprise, so I lean in whispering to him.

" I didn't know you work for Romel?"

"I work nightshift so not many people know about it."

I smirk, and he looks back at my mom.

"And you know about this Charlie? And still decides to go out with him?"

Dad asks, and I nod. He just gave me a straight face then, eat his food.

"So you're saying, you live alone, works at a diner as a waiter. You're basically incompetent. "

"I'm sorry?" Dylan reacted, stunned by my mother's choice of words.

"I mean, of all the places why the kitchen? If you have shame, you would've asked to do it in the bedroom, better yet not at all. Gosh, now I don't know if could ever cook again to that place without remembering what just happened. Disgusting."

She grimaces, then casually drinks her glass of wine.

"Mom"

I said to her offended by what she said. We both give her a look, but she just shrugs her shoulders as if whatever she said is not affecting Dylan.

I felt Dylan held my hand under the table so I looked at him. He just gives me a look, as if saying it's ok when it's obviously painting him. I felt like at that moment all I can do is sympathize with him, so I held back his hand, and I saw him smile a little before looking back to my parents.

"You couldn't be more right, Mrs. Hale. What we did back there is unacceptable. But so you know, I'm serious about your daughter and my intentions are pure. I did not date her because I wanna sleep with her, but because she's special to me."

Dylan explains, and my heart begins to melt, being flattered by what he's saying.

My mom scoffs, then sips one more before looking back at him.

" Special huh? You're just kids, how would you know what feels special?"

"I know, Mrs. Hale, I know how it feels."

Mom stopped talking, frowned at him as she looks at him while waiting for his next words, so was I and my dad.

"I'm in love with your daughter."

I, including my parents, was surprised by the words that escape his lips. I look at him with my overwhelmed eyes, I felt him squeeze my hand tighter.

"What?"

"I do believe you heard me. It's true, I am in love with your daughter. And I know you probably don't like me because I'm not a wealthy as you. But really Mrs. Hale, you should not judge someone by the weight of their pockets or how thick their wallet is. It's not the basis of knowing what is good for your child."

"Dylan" I murmured looking at him fascinated by how brave he is.

"How dare you tell me what's wrong or right, just so you know you're in my house, eating my dinner."

"In that case then," Dylan stand up and put the table cloth over the table, then look down at my parents.

"With all due respect, I am leaving. I had a good time, thanks for the dinner."

He said so confidently, wearing a smirk on his face, then he finds his way out of the dining area.

"Look how disrespectful your boyfriend is! Unbelievable!"

I look at my mother, annoyed by the comment, and stand up myself.

"You're the one who's unbelievable."

I said before following Dylan.

I found him already at the door, wearing his bag.

"Wait Dylan, I'm so sorry."

He smiled at me, cupping my face with his hand.

"It's not your fault."

"But, it was so terrible, I-"

"Shh, remember, I love you."

I went speechless after that, I still can't believe he said it first. I feel like I'm in heaven. He looked behind me, and I noticed that my dad is behind me. He smiled once more, then kissed my forehead.

"I have to go. See you."
