Chapter 13

The stairs seemed to stretch on forever and ever as we continued to move up. "Do they even notice us?" Aladdin groaned, looking like he was about to fall to the ground in a mere second.

Aurora tilted her head up, squinting her eyes as she tried to focus in on the details of the roof above. She had come out of her little daze twenty steps back and was back to normal.

Sort of.

"I still don't see an end to the stairs." We all sighed softly as she announced what she had seen. We continued to trudge up the black stairs, and a throbbing started in my feet and knees.

"Owwwwwww..." I complained, not exactly helping anyone. Aladdin gave my a sympathetic glance before continuing to move ahead. Aurora offered to carry me, but I declined.

How far could she take me? Three steps was what I was betting my money on. Not that I really bet on anything... Not anymore anyways, betting was for when I was just a little mermaid at the young age of 16.

The days of playing under the sea all the time are gone, replaced with long hours of fear. At least that's how it was lately. Everything was different now, so much had changed in just a mere week.

At least I think a week had passed... If I hadn't gone on this mid adventure, maybe I would be at home with Eric, and Mara could be in her rightful place baking cookies or whatever.

We would have had a busy day of taking care of the kingdom, but the evening would have been full of fun! In the morning we'd have eaten a lovely breakfast, then attend to our work, come back to the palace at sunset and enjoy ourselves with a large meal.

And a wonderful meal was what we would enjoy! I missed good food, and my stomach rumbled at the thought of toasting bread with smooth and warm butter slathered on, entering my mouth leaving my taste buds satisfied.

Then I would have had a lovely salad, with that green stuff called lettuce, and those orange bits that Grimsby refers to as carrots. I loved lettuce and carrots! The stuff combined was delicious!

My personal favorite was the soup, which was served as often as possible. It was thick and creamy, with an off white sort of color. It had more green stuff in it, but instead of lettuce, Eric referred to it as broccoli. It was a soup called broccoli and cheddar.

My mouth watered at the thought of these delicacies, and the pain of walking was forgotten. I knew Aurora had different foods, since she had no problem with meat, but most of the dishes she ate were familiar, and I knew all about them. I wondered what dishes Aladdin could possibly be dreaming of.

I had heard from some merchants that Arbaians such as Aladdin enjoyed a wide variety of spices and different foods, much different than what I have I bet.

Wait Ariel, stop thinking about food! I scolded myself, here we were facing the biggest villains in the world, our nemesis's and I was thinking about food. I needed to get in the game!

Hard to do that with an empty stomach and a broken heart though.

Thank you so much Eric, for giving me a broken heart while I have to work so hard to save your sorry little self! And the rest of the world too, but still. Oh what a world! Putting me in such a horrible situation.

I stopped wallowing and entered reality again, the pain in my legs remembered. Aladdin and Aurora were still ahead of me, Aurora leading the pack. Her long hair seemed dirty and rather messy since we haven't exactly come into contact with a hairbrush recently.

Aladdin's hair was still somehow perfect. It shone like silk, the black hairs looking just as clean as ever. I thought of my own dingy red hair, and I'm not even going to lie, I was jealous. Aladdin not only had beautiful hair, but he always made me laugh, no matter what.

But he was with Jasmine, so it obviously meant nothing. We were just good friends in need of happiness in these grave times. Yup that's all. Just good friends. That's what he thought anyways... And that is why I think too. Sort of.

Oh complicated hormones, so complex! They throw me off every time launching me on a roller coaster of emotions and confused feelings. To make times light, and to forget about love and all that, I decided to try and start off a conversation.

"What's your secret? The secret to your hair I mean. It's just so glossy and dark!" Oh that was weak.

"Ariel, I don't want to talk." Aladdin apparently was still deeply in love with Jasmine, enough to suddenly become serious like Aurora.

I would have been like this, if Ursula had tried to hurt someone I loved dearly. But since I kind of hated Eric now, Ursula wasn't all that bad. Sure she tried taking over the sea and took away my voice and nearly took my soul and... Oh. She is horrible.

Great now my problems with Eric are muddling my judgment! Moments like this, I wish Attina was here to help me. She always knew how to comfort me. I guess that's what big sisters are for. And oh thank Walt for big sisters!

I felt bad for all the other princesses. They hadn't ever felt the comfort of being in an older siblings arms, or feeling the playfulness of fighting over petty things and winning because you are the baby of the family.

"Look the stairs are bunching closer!" Aurora's voice brought me out of my thoughts, and like she had said, I noticed the spiral had gotten smaller and smaller, the circle in the middle gradually closing up.

"Yes!" I cheered, running the last couple of steps and ignoring the pain that shot up in my leg whenever I so much as touched the ground with my foot. I felt some loose cement crumble underneath my feet, and soon I was leading the pack tater than Aurora.

"I think we're here you guys." Aladdin whispered, and sure enough we were standing on the last step, and there stood the entrance to doom. There were two torches, one on the right of a magnificent door, and the other torch on the left.

Each black tiki style torch had a green flame, causing eerie green lights to flicker on the dark walls. The door was plain wood, which was ironic considering everything else in this ginormous castle had been fact and completely over board extravagant.

Well extravagantly dark, this looked out of place. Aladdin stepped off the step and all of a sudden he gasped. "What?" He seemed dazed and as I looked at him, his usually playful brown eyes looked dead scared.

He was staring intently at the door, cautiously approaching the plain thing. He was muttering things under his breath and it seemed he had completely forgotten about me and Aurora.

"Aladdin wait!" Aurora called out to him and she jumped off the step, and all of a sudden was paralyzed with fear. And she was looking directly at the wooden door. What was happening.

"No..." Aurora whimpered, and tears flowed down her cheeks, clear pathways of water coming down her cheeks. Her eyes held the same fear as Aladdin's eyes had.

She slowly inched towards the door, approaching the entrance like it was a cobra, and she was trying to get past without being bitten. Was it a cobra?

Was there some kind of magical spell over the door that made it a snake once you stepped off of the stairs? Judging Aladdin and Aurora's chalky faces, I doubted it. Maybe a snake would scare Aurora thus much, but not Aladdin.

What was going on? I guess there was only one way to find out. I slowly and delicately stepped off of the stair case, making a big show out of letting my toes touch the cold hard floor. As soon as my foot touched the ground, I immediately knew what was going on.

I was surrounded by darkness, it was even darker than before, but it was a different kind of darkness. I looked around, and the air around me seemed sort of wavy, like how it looks underneath the ocean.

So I was underwater but where? It all looked so familiar... The it hit me. Why my friends had been so scared, and where I was. Two eels swam by, their slimy tails brushing my arm and I knew I stood at the entrance of the once place I hated with all my life.

Ursula's cove.

Picture on the side is of the staircase! Thanks for reading this far guys ilysm!
