Chapter 1
I sighed contently as I lay in my soft bed, the white sheets engulfing me in comfort. My red hair spilled out on my pillow, but I couldn't care less as of now, it wasn't like I was at a royal ball or anything.
I yawned deeply, smacking my lips and opening my eyes.
The sunlight shone through the one glass window that looked upon the sandy beach, and I could feel the warm rays of the sun creeping up my arms.
I shut my eyes tightly against the bright light that had completely bathed my room in sunny colors. "Eric?" I mumbled lazily as I rolled over to my left, expecting to see my beloved right there next to me, but only seeing an empty space.
The breath was sucked out of me, and Ursula's name repeated in my head, paranoia took over my mind, and I thought of all the things she could have done.
I then smelled the crisp and salty aroma of bread toasting, and heard the crackling of eggs and realized he was only cooking breakfast. How sweet, that even when we had chefs, he still takes time to cook!
I sighed deeply imagining a life without Eric. It would be complete madness that's what! I loved him too much to even dare think of leaving him.
The sound of the ocean slowly drew me out of bed, the calming waves as even and steady as a beating heart.
I slipped out of my silky soft nightgown and tugged my favorite pink dress on, folding my little nightgown and putting them just under my pillow. Taking the brush (yes I have started using a brush) I slowly ran it through my hair until it shone like a piece of sea glass, and it was as soft as pure silk.
Or maybe even as soft and silky as my sisters hair, Arista. Arista's hair was blonde and flowed in the ocean, but she kept it in a messy but gorgeous seahorsetail. I mean, ponytail, oops!
I set the brush down before gliding down the stairs, not tripping once in my feet, a new record! I walked the thirty paces to the kitchen and found Eric at the stove and Mara, our new maid helping him cooking eggs.
"Why good morning sleepyhead, or should I say good afternoon?" Eric smiled pointing at the sun that had climbed its way up the sky.
Mara giggled and she tossed her long wavy brown hair over her shoulder, and for a second that smile reminded me of Vanessa's and I froze. Just as soon as the thought came, I pushed it away. It was all nonsense!
"At least I'm not as bad as Aurora!" I giggled as Eric cracked a smile. "Too bad Aurora didn't have a prince like me to wake her up." He nudged my shoulder, and I laughed, giving him a quick smooch.
Only then did I notice that Mara was slowly sinking into the background, backing up like me and Eric had some horrible disease. Poor shy little girl. Eric placed the eggs on a platter, and I tried my best not to think of Scuttle as I set the table with plates and finally sat down, digging in. Mara set two glasses of water down and soon Eric joined me.
I couldn't help but stare at my lovely Eric for a bit, his black hair shone in the bright sunlight that snuck in through the long windows on the walls. "How's the ocean according to King Triton?" He asked in between bites of his toast and eggs, snapping me out of me daydream and back into reality.
At this, I twisted uncomfortably in my seat. I hadn't heard from any of my sisters, or from my daddy. "Oh everything's fine." I managed to squeak, worrying Eric would be horrible to do, and how could I? His brown eyes stared at me, poking holes in my face as he studied my expression, which was as blank as I could possibly muster.
He opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, when Mara suddenly bounced into the room, her white maids dress billowing around her as if she had a pre made atmosphere just for her.
"Queen Ariel, Jasmine, her Highness has called for you. She told me to say 'the sky is falling'." I dropped my fork as she said this. Eric glanced at me, confused, but I ignored him.The 'Sky is falling' was the quote we princesses used when there was a great danger. Cliche, maybe, and very ridiculous, but it was a very powerful saying to our band of princesses.
"I'm coming Mara. Get the magic carpet ready." Mara nodded and scrambled out of the dining room, her hair flying along with her. As she left, I got up. "Grimsby, please take care of my plate, urgent matters." Grimsby nodded and did as he was told. I thought I heard him grumble 'poor Eric' but I just ignored him.
I was about to exit, when Eric grabbed my hand. "Ariel what is going on?" His expression was confused and pained, and I felt terrible for having to leave him, but whatever was happening must be serious. "Duty calls sweetie." I kissed his cheek and ran out of the castle before he could say anything.
I ran out onto the beach, feet kicking up sand, causing a little storm. I sucked in my breath as I boarded the magic carpet, just as Eric ran out of the building. "STOP!" He bellowed as I rose from the sandy beach, leaving my lovely beach. I simply waved goodbye to Eric as I rose into the sky, until my precious kingdom turned into a mere dot.
