Chapter 9
I handed the accursed mirror back to Aurora, my hands shaking and tears streaming down my face. Aurora immediately landed the carpet in the forest, stopping to comfort me.
"Ariel, what's wrong?" She asked while wrapping me in a hug. I sobbed on her shoulder but managed to blubber out some words. "Eric- Eric was kissing- he was kissing-" and that was all I could manage before bursting into tears.
"Oh you poor thing." She held me close as I sniffled. Aladdin was sleeping, and I was glad. I didn't want him to hear or see me cry. I was just glad Aurora was hear to comfort me.
She stroke my red hair, her fingers brushing through the knots that had gotten themselves in their. I relaxed a little bit. Her presence seemed to strengthen and comfort me.
She started to hum a little song, and I felt even more better. My sobs dissolved into nothing as I listened to her melodic voice, the song releasing all thoughts of my 'prince'.
"Now sit." She ordered softly. I did as she told and she smoothed down my hair once before getting up to go. "I need to go look for food." She explained softly before giving me a warm smile. She turned to start her little trek in the forest and I watched as she left.
I took deep breaths, concentrating on anything other than what I had just seen. The sun was fighting a losing battle to get through the thick greenery, and birds were chirping delightfully all around me.
Every once in a while I would see a squirrel jump from branch to branch, or a bunny hopping on the ground, leading its young to wherever. Aladdin was still sleeping, curled up in a little ball on the magic carpet.
I stared at his shiny black hair, the beautiful hair that reminded me so much of Eric, it made my heart hurt. Why had he betrayed me? How could he have fallen in love with that... That girl?
I hugged my knees close to my chest and stared absentmindedly at the bush in front of me. It was small and round, with prickly green leaves all over. It reminded me vaguely of seaweed, and then it occurred to me that the ocean could be in great peril!
How stupid was I to not even remember all my sisters, or Flounder and Sebastian? This journey even made me forget my own father! I shivered at the thought of them being in danger.
My whole body was racked with worry, and Eric was the least of my troubles right now. I had to be strong and brave, there was no time for fretting over a lost love.
But wasn't life all about true love? What had happened to that? All my life, I wanted to be with a man who made my life happier than ever. At sixteen I had met that man, and my life seemed complete, but what would I do now?
I was so wrapped up in my thoughts, I didn't even realize Aladdin had woken up until he sat next to me. His white toga touched my blue one, and I was happy to see a friend.
"Hey fish." He greeted nonchalantly. "How was your rest?" I asked a little tentatively, my voice in danger of breaking at any moment. He obviously detected something was amiss because he furrowed his eyebrows and scrutinized my face.
"Good. Now what's wrong?" He was getting straight to the point, obviously in no mood to play games. "Just some problems with Eric." I managed to sputter out. He rose his eyebrow, not satisfied but I just stared blankly ahead.
"And what's wrong in Paradise?" He prodded. I tried not to be annoyed, he was only trying to help. "He.... He was kissing someone." I burrowed my head in between my knees, fighting the tears that threatened to flow down.
Aladdin was obviously not expecting that because he froze for a moment, his face caught between anger and confusion. "Well he's not smart enough to realize he already has a beautiful girl." I know he was just trying to comfort me, but my heart soared at his words.
I looked at him hopefully, my tears gone. "You really think that?" He nodded seriously before laughing. "Just don't tell Aurora I said that." He chuckled with a wink.
I barely managed not to blush, but I couldn't help the smile that formed on my face. I elbowed him slightly. "Jasmine sure has a charmer." He faltered slightly when I said Jasmine, but smiled brightly again.
"More charming then Prince Charming!" He grinned. "Don't oversell yourself now." I smirked, and just like that, my spirits were lifted all the way to the sky.
Aurora had made me feel comfortable and less sad, but Aladdin had made everything better with his mischievous smile.
He laughed before realizing Aurora was gone. "Wait where's miss blondie?" He asked a little bit worried. "She went to gather food." I replied quietly.
"So I guess that mean berries and an assorted variety of herbs for lunch then." I nodded as he pretty much listed the only food Aurora would get in this forest. I thought of her cottage, maybe she would get something from there.
Perhaps she would even find Flora Fauna and Merryweather! I cheered up even more at the thought of good magic. Perhaps I could finally change out of this now slightly filthy toga! About time.
"But wait... She's alone?" I nodded at his odd question. "And she's in her Kingdom." He continued. "Good job identifying the obvious!" I stated sarcastically, but he didn't grin.
In fact, I his face there was a frown rather than a grin. "And she's also near Malificent." He finished and the smile was wiped off my face. Right when he said that, we head a shrill and female voice pierce the air. It was a scream.
And it was most definitely Aurora's. Aladdin and I gave each other a quick look, and in two seconds flat, we had jumped onto the carpet and we were riding like the wind, chasing after Aurora's voice. I crossed my fingers, and all I could do was hope Aurora was going to be all right when we got there.
How in the world had I forgotten that? Once again, my grief had taken me away from what really matters, and this time Aurora might pay a price for my stupidity.
Aladdin was hunched over, swerving left and right, avoiding trees and bushes and even some deer as we raced to get Aurora.
My hair blew in the wind, and we were going so fast my eyes were beginning to tear up. I could only imagine what we looked like to the animals, a blue of red black and white all swirled up in one crazy, blurry mess.
How had she traveled so far in such a short distance? Suddenly I saw a flash of gold, gold that matched Aurora's hair exactly. "Aladdin stop!" I managed to yell out.
He pulled the carpet to a stop, and we saw Aurora kneeling on the ground, staring at something. She was shivering and looked as pale as a ghost.
We both jumped of the carpet and ran to her. She was mumbling and holding something up to her face. I slowly walked up to her, my right hand stretched out, ready to stroke her hair.
I leaned in closer to hear what she was whispering, and I saw a crazed look in her blue-purple eyes. "He was here..." She kept on repeating those words, and I looked down into her hands and saw Phillips red hat.
