Dorinda and Chester stared in shock as they witnessed Diedre's fit.

Dorinda gathered her son, running her hand through his hair in a soothing manner. They went in deep conversation, leaving me to the side.

I didn't mind; I made my way out the restaurant's doors, unwilling to let Diedre go.

She had a cigarette in her mouth as she made her way to a small sports car. Her hand shook as she lit the small bud.

"Diedre!" I yelled, finally meeting her reflection in a window. "I heard what you said about me back there. For what it's worth, I'm not after your family's money."

She took a moment to place her lighter in her pocket before taking a quick drag. She started to laugh dispassionately.

"You think I don't know what you're up to? A mousy little thing like you? That was dirty of you, to suggest the things you two did in that greenhouse. My Hero would never do that. It was a cemetery-"

"With all due respect," I snapped, "That greenhouse is far from a homage anymore. You made sure of that when you molested him. And he's not yours."

Diedre glowered, staring at me with disdain.

"Did I not teach you a lesson with that hot water last time? You're brave talking to a woman with a cigarette in her hand."

I scoffed. "Is empty threats all you know? If you burn me again, Hero will catch on to who you really are. You're pissed because that greenhouse is no longer your special place anymore. You're upset because I'm not going anywhere. Hero and I will be together for a long time and will get married and you can't stand it-"

"When were the times you children did as you were told?" Diedre demanded. "Your sole duty is to lay back and let the adults do what they must."

"And you must rape your grandchild?" I challenged.

Diedre snorted. "I don't even know where you get these silly ideas. I cared for my boy. Always. He needed discipline and I gave it to him."

I forced myself to hold back. I couldn't believe what was coming out of her mouth.

She needed a wake up call.

I sighed.

"He told me everything. He even told me how you try to touch him still..."

At this, Diedre's eyes began to water.

"My matters of punishing him were a bit unorthodox I'll admit, but anything that happened... remained between us. I'm his friend. I'm his confidant. He knows that I'm the only one he needs to turn to."

She was actually sick. She really believed that it would be kept a secret for the entirety of his life.

"Well, it wasn't a secret between you two for long," I admitted, "He told me how every night you'd teach him another one of your lessons. You didn't teach him anything. He's afraid of you, Diedre. He has nightmares."

All of this seemed to have pushed her over the edge. She went right for my throat, struggling to choke me. There were now people gathering around us, offering help.

"Is everything alright here?"

"Why are you choking that girl?"

"Do we need to call the cops?"

Seeing that she was cornered, Diedre released her grip on me and started reaching for the handle of her car.

"You won't last my dear," She hissed.  "They all lose interest one way or another."

As she sped off in her car, all the strangers gathered began questioning me and checking my throat for any wounds.

Once the parking lot was as full as an amphitheater, Hero and his parents exited the restaurant looking confused.

"What happened?" Hero asked, rushing towards me.

"Thank god you're here," An elderly woman with a cane spoke, "Some maniac was strangling this young girl."

I swallowed past a lump in my throat.

"Diedre. She was choking me. Now, do you believe me?"

Hero didn't answer. He simply gathered me in his arms, pressing his lips to the top of my head.

As we stood in silence, listening to the voices surrounding us, my phone buzzed in my hand.

Looking at the contact I saw that it was an unknown number calling. Without thinking, I picked up.

"Hello?"

Hero raised an eyebrow as I edged farther away from him.

"Kristina. It's Elouise. Your mother. We need to talk."

Now shit can get real 🙄

Love you all.
