For the past two weeks I have been stuck here in this cabin with nothing to do but to watch the fire or stare out the window watching it snow. Devon had been planning this for quite some time with how many supplies he has around here.
My back has been hurting a lot lately and I am starting to worry about having this baby without Doc around. "Devon, I can't have the baby without my doctor" I said looking up at him.
He was by the window while I was sitting on the couch, I have not been wanting to move a lot lately, of course there is not much to do besides pace the house and that got Devon mad one day.
So now after he had the nerve to smack me, I just sit around and sleep off and on, "I have been trained in situations like this Athena, so no doctor" he said with a sharp tone to his voice.
"I am going to have to go into town tomorrow, I will be gone for two days at the most, I expect you to still be here Athena" he said turning around and walking towards me.
"Where in the world would I go when I'm close to delivering and it's winter out there Devon" I said in a snarky tone right back to him.
I knew there was no way I could leave, by watching the snowfall there must be at least three feet of snow already in this area and everyday it keeps snowing. "Just make sure you stay put; I will not have you put our baby's life in danger because you want to go back to Tom" he said.
I did not respond, he had to have known that was what was keeping me sane this whole time, hoping that Tom and the brothers would find me some way, somehow.
"I think it's time for bed" was all he said, and he held out his hand to help me off the couch. I took a deep breath and followed him into the bedroom.
The next morning, he woke me up when he was heading out, I just mumbled something and fell back asleep. A few hours later I woke up and laid there. My back was starting to hurt.
Then the sharp pains started, "no, it's not time yet, oh please don't come yet" I cried. I tried to get up and I fell over in bed crying out in pain, I was scared not knowing what to do.
I had no one to help me, if this was time, I had to get ready on my own. I slowly made my way to the kitchen to boil some water and I got the rags ready and put them in the bathroom.
I put towels in the tub, since that is where I was going to have the baby, I decided. I carried the water in the bucket into the bathroom. The pain was doubling, and I made sure to sterilize the tools I was going to need to use.
I made sure there were plenty of logs in the fire going, so I would not have to worry about that. I took off my clothes and put a pillow behind me in the tub. The pain was hitting every minute now.
I knew I was getting close to delivering my baby, "oh the lords help me with this" I cried, I got into the tub, laid against the pillow, and took slow deep breaths until I was panting with pain.
A gush of water came from between my legs, which is when the pain doubled on me, and the urge to push hit, putting my legs up on the tub to help when I pushed.
After a few minutes with the mirror, I had set up I could see the baby's head crown and I gave another push when I felt the need to and out came the head, I bent over and cleaned out the nose and mouth.
Another good push and the shoulders came out and the rest of the baby came sliding out of me. I wrapped her in a towel. I had a baby girl. Making sure her nose and mouth were clear I taped her butt and she let out a massive cry.
I was crying right along with her; I laid her down wrapped in the towels to keep her warm as I cut the cord and tied it off. Now I had to get the placenta out of me.
I lightly tugged on the cord that was still a part of me and the placenta came sliding out of me into the tub.
I laid there for a moment catching my breath, I gently picked up my baby and with the rags wiped her clean and then wrapped her in new blankets that Devon had for her.
I placed her on the floor so I could climb out of the tub, after I was out, I put on my underwear that had pads for this occasion. Then I picked up my little girl and took her to the bassinet.
She laid there peacefully, and I went to clean myself up a little bit and put on some clothes, I could care less about the tub at this moment. After I was cleaned up and dressed, I went to my baby.
I made sure the bassinet was next to my side of the bed and the fire was going good and strong, I picked up my baby and placed her to my breast to feed, she latched on right away.
I let out a breath I was holding making sure I was doing everything right, Doc had me learn everything in case he could not make it in time since I lived out in the middle of nowhere.
I am so glad I followed his directions. Now I had my sweet little baby girl in my arms feeding and I was resting comfortably propped up in bed.
Oh, how I wish Tom were here with me, lying next to me touching the little fingers and toes of our baby. "One day soon little one you will get to meet your dad; he is a great man who will love you and protect you" I whispered to my baby.
Once she was fed and burped, she fell asleep against my chest. I was not going to move her for anything, we were cuddling and content while I watched the fire dance along the logs.
