For the next three days the storm was raging nonstop. It took me awhile to get to the barns and at least the animals stayed warm and dry and had plenty of food and water.
I would spend time with each one of them, brushing and talking to them all, making sure they were all okay. The garden barn was doing well, considering the weather.
I had special cords that would run from the generator to the barns so if I needed to plug something in for a few I could. I made sure to plug in the sunlamps for the plants thirty minutes each day so they could get some of the light they needed to keep producing.
After dinner, I made sure the fires were set and I noticed the snow was a bit lighter than it had been. Hopefully, the storm was passing and that would be the end of it.
I miss the summer days when I could not deal with the cold and snow, I could walk around with shorts on and an iced tea in hand enjoying watching the animals in their pastures.
I knew soon it would be here, but sometimes not fast enough for me. I threw on an old pair of sweatpants and a large sweatshirt and covered up with my comforter and a good old movie before bedtime.
I woke up to a knocking at the front door. I sat up and listened and there it was again, a knocking. I looked at the clock at two thirty in the morning. "Who in the hell?" I asked aloud.
It could not be I thought, I still grabbed my gun from the nightstand in put in my back waist band and went to the front door. "What do you want?" I asked, looking out and saw it was Devon.
I was not about to just open it for him this time.
"Athena, please open up, I really don't want to die out here" he said. I could tell his teeth were chattering, I smiled to myself. That is what you get for leaving me without a goodbye.
I opened the door, and moved aside so he could come in. After I shut and locked the door, I turned to him, "why are you here Devon?" I asked. Secretly I was excited to see him, but I would be damned if I was going to show it.
"I couldn't live in that city without you, I really tried, but you were always on my mind, I would pass by a store and see something every time that would remind me of you" he said taking off his winter wear.
"I see you came prepared this time" I said motioning to his jacket and boots. "This time I did" he said. Once he had his stuff off, we went to the family room where he sat next to the fireplace.
"Would you like something to drink?" I asked halfway towards the kitchen. I was going to make some tea, but I thought I would be nice enough to ask him. "What are you going to have?" he asked standing up.
"I was going to have some tea" I said starting up the fire in the stove and placing the kettle on it.
"If it's not too much trouble I would love some" he said walking towards me, when my back turned that was when he wrapped his arms around me like that first night.
I took a deep breath and leaned back into him, he felt right, comfortable, and secure.
"I see you have your gun on you" he chuckled. "Always, can't be too sure who is going to show up in the middle of the night during a snowstorm" I said as I took it out and went to put it in the nightstand.
"My girl is always prepared" he said, and I stopped. I turned to him, "what did you just say?" I asked curious and irritated at the same time.
"I said, my girl" Devon said as he walked up to me and pulled me to him and kissed me on my lips, gentle at first but then rougher more demanding and I could not hold off I gave into that kiss that I was missing so much.
I heard the kettle go off and broke our kiss, I went to make our tea and we settled on the couch, catching up with each other on what we have missed during the month we were apart.
