Doc and his wife left that afternoon, I was settled on the couch with Destiny laying fast asleep on my chest, "I will never get tired of seeing this sight" Tom said smiling down at us.
"Well, I hope not, because I'm thinking in a year, we will be having another one" I said and winked at him, he knew I wanted to wait at least a year before getting pregnant with another baby.
I wanted my body to heal and to spend the first year with Destiny giving her all my attention and love and watching her grow before another baby takes up half my time.
We both agreed that a two-year span between the kids would be a promising idea. There was a knock at the door, even though Know Devon is not that stupid my heart rate went up and Tom went to the door.
It was his dad Mark, and I could take a few deep breaths to slow down my heart rate, I am going to have to learn not to react with that damn door. "Where is my beautiful son-to-be daughter-in-law and my precious granddaughter?" Mark asked as he walked into the house.
"Hi Mark" I said from the couch, I smiled up at the man, I could see where Tom gets his looks from. Mark was a mountain of a man, but he walked with stealth and power rolled off him.
To be on his good side was a wise thing to always be, I would hate to see that man angry. "There they both are" he said smiling and walking over to us. He sat down next to me.
"Is it okay if I hold her?" he asked quietly, "of course you can" 'I said and gently handed Destiny's little sleeping form to Mark, he cradled her and sat back against the couch.
Destiny opened her eyes, looked at the strange man holding her, was quiet for a moment, you would think intently staring him down, then she smiled a tiny smile and fell back asleep in his arms.
From that point on, Mark was all mush over his granddaughter. "Ath, you are a remarkable woman with everything you went through, I am so happy that my son makes you happy and that you chose him" he said not taking his eyes off Destiny.
Tom brought us drinks and some snacks, all three of us chatted for a while, with nothing about it until after I fed Destiny and put her in her bassinet in her room for a bit.
"Okay dad, besides seeing your granddaughter why you are really here?" Tom asked.
"Well, I hate to be the bringer of sad news, but I don't know if this constitutes shocking news, but anyway, Ath, Devon is dead. He was killed a few nights ago by the guards for trying to break into your home" Mark said taking a sip of coffee.
I sat there for a moment in shock, "okay wait, Devon was here and tried to break into my home and one of the guards killed him?" I asked.
"Yes" was all Mark said to me. Okay I did not mind that Devon was dead, but that ass tried to break into my home, he is lucky he is dead or else I would have killed him myself for trying that.
"Okay that's not shocking news, it's a bit sad but now I won't have to live in fear every time the door knocks, or I see a shadow" I said holding my coffee cup.
"There's more though Ath, Devon had a brother that always stayed away until now. The problem is with the old laws of our kind, he is calling on the council to enact the family law. Which means he wants what Devon had and in Devon's will he has you listed as his wife, so his brother is enacting the law that you become his wife" Mark said.
I put my head back on the couch, "will this get any better" I asked no one in particular.
Mark pulled me over to him, "Ath, I know this family unfortunately, Devon's brother Eric isn't a nice guy by any means. He is arrogant and aggressive, but the council will not be allowing that old law to happen to you" he said and kept his one arm around me.
