Chapter 5

For food I carefully look through the jungle underbrush, searching for edible things. Never again will I reduce myself by begging from Mitch. It was already bad enough when I had to steal the vegetable from him, that measly thing. Shuddering, I recall his crushing weight on top of me.  I thought I'd die from suffocation.

Eventually my search proves worthwhile when I find an oddly shaped piece of bark that could be useful as a bucket. Something Mitch doesn't have.

             Cue smug smile.

Breathing in a deep sigh of contentment, I look at all the colorful arrays of color that surround me. This jungle is truly beautiful. I could probably enjoy this place if one factor was subtracted. Mitch! My thoughts fade as chirping comes from the branch above me. Looking up, an unwarranted coo slips from my lips as I gaze at the cutest animal I've ever seen. The little animal resembling a monkey hangs from a limb staring at me curiously.

"Hey little guy," I whisper. "You are so cute." The animal whimpers, backing away from me as caution fills his huge eyes.

"Don't worry," I say, "I won't hurt you." It still shies away.

Pouting my lips I continue, "Aw c'mon I'm not that bad. Not as much as this other person on this island. He's conceited, arrogant, and downright rude. But don't worry, I'm nothing like that." Shifting it's legs, it now hangs upside down, huge eyes still examining me. I guess by now he's figured that I'm not a threat. A smile appears as I watch his antics from the corner of my eye while reaching to pick a pretty pink flower from a nearby bush. He immediately sits up and his curious eyes follow the flower. I laugh, wondering if the animal knows how entertaining he is.

Handing the flower to him I ask, "Do you want it?" Look at me, talking and trying to make friends with an animal. Is Kate Harrison finally cracking? The furry ball greedily snatches the flower from me and shoves it into it's mouth.

"Okay, that's a little freaky," I comment while edging away slowly. The animal watches as I back away and lets out another chirp. Swinging from the branch, it propels itself through the air and lands with arms encircling my neck.

I scream, sure it plans to bite me, and fall backwards. He doesn't notice my distress as he snuggles closer to my chest while turning big eyes to look at me.

"Oh, you wanted to be friends," I chuckle nervously. It doesn't react, instead running it's curious eyes over my body to take in every detail.

            "Are you checking me out?"

            Funny joke huh.

After becoming bored with staring at me, the animal hops off onto the ground. Reaching into a nearby bush, he hastily begins to snatch berries and stuff them in his mouth.

"Ooh food!" I bend down next to him and grab berries from the bush, plunking them in my bucket near my feet. I've accomplished mission number one, get food. Glancing at the monkey-animal I smile, maybe this survival thing won't be too bad. Hey, I've already found food and freshwater. Now all I need is some sort of transportation to get home in.

This isn't so bad and all, but I just want to go home.

I hope Mom still knows I'm alive.
