<<<[Chapter 16]>>>
(Recap)
Inside the foliage I leap over logs like a madwoman and duck to avoid low hanging limbs. Thank you God for making me short, I think. Mitch, being super tall, has a harder time giving me precious escape time. Finally no longer hearing his angry panting, and menacing threats behind me I stop to pause for a breath. I then climb a tree and don’t stop until I reach the highest branch.
I guess this is the way I’ll be spending my night. Please don’t let Mitch find me. I carefully wrap my arms around the branch for insurance of not falling and listen to the eerie sounds of the jungle. My eyes are open wide and my heartbeats wildly in my chest.
Goodnight world, I think, hopefully I’ll live to see you tomorrow.

I wake up stiff my arms raw from rubbing on the branch. I slowly sit up and rub my eyes carefully balancing myself on the branch so I won’t fall. I’m still alive! It’s a miracle! Once my eyes seem well adjusted to the light streaming in from above I take in my precarious surroundings. I’m pretty far up, so far up that my stomach lurches at the thought of coming down. I must have been pretty scared last night, hopefully Mitch’s anger wore off and we can go back to being frenemies. Not ‘I’m going to kill you when I get my hands on you’ partners.
My stomach leaps into my throat as I scamper down the tree. It’s ok Kate, I think, you will survive- hopefully. I cling to the bark and limbs with an iron grip as I slowly slide down the tree. Finally after what seems like an eternity my feet touch the ground and I heave a sigh of relief. Thank you God, I think as I slip away from the tree and make my way through the disarrayed forest.
When I reach the patch of foliage that sits in front of my camp I carefully peek through a patch of bushes. Nope, Mitch isn’t anywhere in sight. I exhale in relief as I skip out of the woods and onto the silky sand. It finally dried from the rainstorm yesterday leaving it the way it normally is, silky, dry, and smooth. I sit down on the sand and dig my toes into the warm carpet beneath my feet. The ocean before me rolls quietly setting me at peace and I close my eyes enjoying the silence around me.
“KATE,” a voice bellows disturbing the silence. I flit my eyes and see a figure with wild mahogany hair and chilling grey eyes heading for me. Before Mitch can even think I’ve dashed off into the woods and started running for my life. I thought he might have gotten over yesterday; guess not.
Ten minutes later I squat on the ground, panting and out of breath. I feel so exhausted and tired. I slowly allow myself to fall onto the comfortable moss beneath me; I can’t run anymore. Let Mitch do as he pleases, I don’t have the strength to run anymore. So I snuggle against the natural carpet beneath me and think of my last words.
Mitch O’Conner was a pathetic excuse for a human.
French fries and ketchup are my favorite food.
Or how about Whitney Houston style; And I-I-I-I-I will always hate you...
I’ve been waiting for a few minutes when I hear no one coming. Is it possible that I lost Mitch off my tail for the second time? I must be getting pretty fast, or maybe Mitch is planning something... Let’s go with the less morbid option, I’m getting faster. Surprisingly I feel a yawn slip from my lips and my eyes flutter tiredly.
