(Recap)

“Can we go there,” I ask excitedly as I shake his arm, “I love fireflies!”

“Yeah but one thing,” Mitch says slowly.

“What,” I frown as I look at him warily.

“You’re going to have to leave the crutches,” he points out, “It’s going to get dark soon. You’ll be falling and stumbling if you try to use them then.”

“But how can I go then,” I question disappointed.

“Well,” Mitch runs a hand through his hair, “If I carry you...”

“Ah,” I cough as my cheeks flush, “Is that the only way.”

“Yep,” Mitch pops the ‘p’. I shrug shyly as Mitch lifts me bridal style and he begins to walk.

“It isn’t that far right,” I ask as I look up at his face.

“It’s a short walk,” Mitch grins down at me, “And I don’t think I could carry you further,” he chuckles, “You are kind of heavy.”

“Hey,” I smack his arm. Mitch bursts out laughing as we walk and despite my attempts to hide it, a smile breaks out over my face.

“I don’t see fireflies,” I complain as Mitch seats me on a log in a clearing.

“Patience tiger,” Mitch whispers in my ear as he sits next to me, his breath softly brushes my ear. I involuntarily shiver and feel my spine tingle. Oh no, the weird symptoms are coming back. Why does this always happen?

I turn my attention back to the clearing before us and squint my eyes in concentration. My eyes widen when I see a flicker of light and I hold my breath. Another light flashes, then another, and another. Soon the whole air, and ground is full of the light. It creates a soft glow, like firelight, that fills the space around us.

“It’s amazing,” I say softly and turn to Mitch. He looks down at me and smiles at my excitement. I feel the pit of my stomach twist and my heart start thumping. His grey orbs flit away as the fireflies form a huge pulsing mass and dance back and forth. My breath catches in my throat as I watch the beauty before me.

“It looks like Christmas lights,” Mitch murmurs as he watches the scene before us. I sneak a glance at him and note his angled jaw and high cheekbones. His grey eyes race back and forth as he watches the fireflies in front of us. I guess he can feel my eyes staring at him because he turns. His grey eyes hold my gaze for an unnerving amount of time. Soon I embarrassedly flit my gaze elsewhere as my cheeks fill with a bright red. I twist my hands in my lap awkwardly and nervously bite my lip. What is wrong with me?!

I watch with renewed interest at the fireflies and marvel at their brightness. I wonder what it would be like to hold one? At the exact moment Mitch pops the question.

“Do you want to catch one,” Mitch asks as his eyes dance playfully. I nod eagerly and allow myself to be picked up by Mitch and carried into the whirring mass of wings. When one of them comes close I flinch away.
