Breakfast the next day was livelier than it usually was these days.

Dick had been the one to encourage conversation.

John had tried to match his dad's energy, but not to much avail.

You had remained mostly silent and let the father-son duo do their thing.

"So, I'm sorry that haven't been… on Earth for the last few days," Dick said sheepishly, "Let me make it up to you two. How about we go on a family trip next weekend? Anywhere you want."

You smiled, or at least tried to, "Are you sure? I thought you were busy with your move?"

John's fork clattered.

"John–?", You tried to ask, but he was already slamming his bedroom door.

You sighed, "I'm a horrible mom. Clearly."

"No, you're an amazing mom," Dick said gently, "It's been a really hard time. You're doing your best."

"Am I?", You challenged, "It feels like I'm destroying everything. Like I'm the one ruining his life. Like I'm making feel that… that I want this. Who would want this?! I-"

"I can stay here," Dick said solemnly, "I can just end–"

"No, absolutely not," You replied hastily, "As much as I… I want you stay, I do, but… I want you and John to be happy."

"Won't me staying make everything better?", Dick asked with sadness in his voice.

"Maybe for a little while," You sighed, "But you said it yourself. She's the love of your life. You're truly… happy with her and you… you belong… with her."

"I know…" Dick replied, "But it's clearly making you miserable and John–"

"You really think that John or I can ever be truly happy with the knowledge that you're trapped in a marriage with someone you don't love?", You challenged with tears in your eyes, "I know what it feels like to be in a relationship where one loves the other, but the other doesn't love them back. It's a horrible feeling and I don't want John to see that in his parents."

Dick had taken your hand now and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"I'd rather…" You began to force out, "I'd rather live in a household where we're separated and happy, instead of… instead of together and miserable, okay?"
