"Byron, let's go!" I yelled out to him. He was taking forever in the bathroom and he had to get to school.

He hasn't been to school in 3 weeks and it was finally time to go back. Whether he liked it or not.

I had to drop off Iva and then Amina. So he needed to hurry up. We only have 2 bathrooms and he spent at least 30 minutes in there.

"I'm coming!" He yelled back. That was the third time he said that.

"Come now!" I yelled back and I could hear him kiss his teeth from the bathroom. He walked out and looked the same from before he went into the bathroom. His curls were just wet. That was literally it.

Iva was already in the car and Amina was sitting on the couch.

"Mini, you got your stuff?" I asked her and she nodded then hopped off the couch. She almost lost her balance wearing her backpack.

Byron took off her backpack and carried it for her.

Aw.

We got in the car and Byron put both of his airpods in which was good 'cause I had grown stuff to talk about with Iva.

"Have you talked to Jovan yet?" I asked her and she shook her head. "Why not?"

"I haven't had the chance. He's not at the store anymore and I just don't feel like talking about it." She shrugged like it was nothing.

"Iva, this boy has been sleeping on our couch for 3 weeks. It's time for him to go back home. Regardless, of what the argument between them is. You need to talk to Jovan and Byron needs to leave." I said truthfully. I don't care if that's not what she wanted to her. She needed to hear that.

"You know I can hear y'all, right?" Byron chimed in and we both went quiet. We were not that loud so he was definitely ear hustling.

"Sorry, Byron." Iva said. He didn't bother to respond.

"I'll talk to him today." She says as I pull up to the grocery store. She says her goodbyes to Mini and then leaves.

I drive to drop off Mini and surprisingly she didn't cry or have a tantrum today. She was having a good day.

Byron came to the front seat instead of staying in the backseat.

The drive was silent.

"I want to go to college." He blurted out.

"Okay, what changed your mind?" I asked.

"I don't know. I really do want to be a doctor. When I was in the hospital, everything that they did I could do. I could help someone."

"That's really good, Byron." I smiled.

"Can you help me?" He asked and I furrowed my eyebrows.

"What do you mean?"

"With my college application and my grades. They're only average right now."

"Yeah. It won't be that hard because you're smart. You just need to apply that to your work. What sports do you do?"

"I did basketball." He mentioned

"Okay, that's good." We talked more about his college application and the things people would like to see on it.

I was glad that Byron was getting his life together. He has a lot of potential and needs to use it for the better. I didn't want him to just sit on it.

Maybe Byron getting shot was what he needed to realize that he doesn't want an average life. He wants to be greater than the medium human.

He wanted to make more of himself.
