A/N So hallo! I know I've been dead on this book for months but now I'm back with an update! *Cue happy noises* Anyway... Last 8 chapters 😭😭...
Question: Since I've been off for so long... How are you at this moment? Answer honestly.
"Are you sure you can manage it, warlock?" the client asked from the other side of the phone. Magnus fought to keep his voice from trembling.
"You got it," he said and then hung up before starting to physically shake. How many centuries has it been? Many. And Magnus still couldn't get over it. He felt a few tears starting to fall and immediately brushed them away just as Alec came home from work. Magnus tried to act normal.
It didn't work.
Alec dropped his bag, hurriedly undid his boots to come and take Magnus' hands in his.
"What's wrong?"
Magnus considered lying, but he knew there would be absolutely no point.
"A client and a task," Magnus said, still in shock from what he had to do.
"What did the client want, love?" Alec asked, still in the same gentle tone.
"I need to do a spell that's going to set a lot of things on fire and then I have to basically flood the place. And then swim out," Magnus explained and he didn't need to say anymore. Alec tightened his hold on Magnus.
"You don't have to do it, Magnus," Alec said after a while.
"Alexander," Magnus said in a voice that was almost pleading, "It's been centuries. And I still can't forget."
"Magnus, your step-father tried to drown you. And now a client is basically asking you to flood the place you stand on. It's okay if it still hurts."
"But I can't just turn it down. It's such a simple spell," Magnus protested.
"The memories aren't simple though, are they, love?" Alec said in a bare whisper.
"N - no," Magnus shook his head, "But I can't not do this just because the flooding part brings back terrible memories. Just need to summon this special fire, let it burn enough, put it out by flooding the place and create a Portal outside. In the water. That's all."
"Magnus you're clearly uneasy with doing it," Alec tried to argue.
"I can do it. I just need to not freak out. It'll be fine," Magnus then started rambling, like he did when he was nervous. It took someone as close as Alec to spot it. In his thoughts, Magnus had gone out of Alec's arms, but the Shadowhunter firmly tugged him back, hands on the warlock's shoulder and Magnus stopped talking, looked into blue eyes that made him speechless every time.
"Magnus," Alec said, emphasizing the word, "Listen to me."
Magnus nodded. When Alec said anything like that, it was impossible to ignore.
"Of course you can do the spell," Alec began, "Of course it's a simple spell. But that spell will remind of things that you are deparately trying to forget. It'll bring everything back. If you want to do it, you should, but you need to also think about whether you can cope with the memories."
"Alexander, I need to be able to cope with the memories," Magnus said hastily.
"Hey," Alec said, voice softer, "I believe in you, Magnus. I know that if you want to do this, you will. But I need you to be careful. I need to know that you'll come back to me."
"Of course I will, Alexander," Magnus whispered, "I always will."
"You just need to know that those memories are far away now, Magnus. I know they seem so close, but they're very far away."
"I know," Magnus said, "I'll be able to do this. It's barely anything. Except the memories. But I'll be okay. I'll remember that they are far away."
Alec smiled, "It'll be a piece of cake. For you."
Magnus grinned and pulled Alec into a kiss, knowing that Alec's words will definitely help him when he is helping out his clients.
"Anyway, sweetheart," Magnus murmured when they pulled away, "How was your day?"
"It was okay. Just training and meetings," Alec said, "Rather boring."
"Up for some non-boring activity now?" Magnus winked.
"Please tell me it's eating," Alec said, "I'm so hungry."
"Oh wow," Magnus rolled his eyes dramatically, "I was going to say something even more exciting."
"Like?" Alec prompted in an equally teasing tone.
"This," Magnus said and pulled Alec into a kiss that was a lot more fire than the previous one.
Turned out that neither of them had dinner for a long while.
