25 - Look Both Ways

A/N This idea is from fangirl1918 She's lovely and so nice and also go check out her work! It's SO good!! This is a high school AU, by the way and there is mentions and attempts of self-harm in this chapter, so don't read if you know it's going to affect you xx -IC

"I've had enough!" Magnus screeched at his boyfriend, Alec. They were standing in one of the quieter places of the playground and they were glaring at each other. Everyone else had already filed out and but Magnus and Alec stood, neither of them willing to let this go unsorted before they head home.

"Magnus, for God's sake, he's just a friend!" Alec screamed back.

"Oh yes," Magnus growled back sarcastically, "That's why you have not come on the past three dates I've arranged. Because you wanted to study with your friend!"

"Magnus, stop! I don't like him. I only and will always only like you," Alec said, feeling desperate.

"Lies, lies and more lies!" Magnus snapped back and bolted out of school, towards the road. He was furious that Alec's 'friend' could make him laugh more than Magnus could, could steer Alec away from anything with a soft touch to his shoulder or upper arm. Their first kiss, Magnus had grasped Alec's elbow and tugged the boy towards him. It annoyed him everytime when Alec's 'friend' held Alec's elbow the exact way Magnus had.

"Magnus!" Alec called. Magnus ignored him and walked along the pavement. He heard Alec's footsteps behind a him and tear escaped his eyes. He wiped at it urgently and kept on walking.

Alec had had enough. He had followed him this far and Magnus wasn't doing him any favours.

"Look both ways before you cross," Alec called one last time; it was a cruel and sarcastic remark.

"Thanks, darling, it's flattering to see your love for me!" Magnus snapped back, equally dry and sarcastic.

Alec turned around and walked straight into his sister, Izzy.

"What was that all about?" she inquired.

"You heard?" Alec asked, dipping his head.

"I did. I don't know what's wrong between you two, but please sort it out," Izzy said.

"I've tried. He won't. So let's go home, Iz."

"What if he attempts something bad?" Izzy asked, "He is on a road after-all."

Alec knew Izzy was only saying this to try and get him to go back but it still nudged at his heart. Izzy could be right, and besides Magnus didn't have a long way to go before he had to cross a main road. With a calming sigh and murderous glance at his grinning sister, Alec dropped his school bag, watched as Izzy picked it up, and sprinted down the pavement.

Alec stopped for one moment with utter panic. Magnus was swaying as he walked onto the main road. A car nearly ran over him but Magnus refused to aknowledge anything as he walked forward. Alec heard his own ragged breathing. Magnus was actually attempting this just because he thought Alec liked a random boy who was supposedly his best friend. 

Alec took off again and saw Magnus standing in the middle of the road, legs and arms spread out wide. A massive truck was coming down the road. Magnus was not doing this.Alec didn't think. He bolted onto the road, wrapped his hands around Magnus' waist and pushed him towards the other pavement. Both of them fell back and the truck whizzed past.

Alec was furious. Magnus had his eyes closed and his school bag was somehow on the road. Alec tugged Magnus up and led him to a park near by and pushed him so he was sat on the bench.

"MAGNUS, ARE YOU CRAZY?" Alec screamed. Thankfully no one was at the park.

"Alexander?" Magnus squeaked out, opening his eyes half way.

"Magnus, what the hell were you thinking?!" Alec yelled again.

"You. You and how your friend was better than me. How he makes you laugh more than I do," Magnus answered and Alec couldn't help but make a noise of absolute frustration and face-palm. A minute or two passed.

"Oh Magnus," Alec said, breaking the silence, and his voice was gentle. He kneeled down on the grass, cupping Magnus' cheek, "Don't ever do anything so stupid again. And my friend is not better than you. You are the best person ever and every morning when I wake up, I think about you and only you. Every night I think about you before falling sleeping, Magnus. And no one can make me laugh the way you do. No one ever has and no one ever will. You are my everything, Magnus. Please don't ever do what you did a minute ago. If anything happens to you, it happens to me as well, Magnus, yeah?"

Magnus nodded slowly and pulled Alec in for a kiss. Alec went willingly and they kissed. The kiss  was a promise that they'd never ever hurt each other again in any way. The kiss caught fire and Alec closed his eyes, letting the feel of Magnus wash over him.

Ten years later...

Max Lightwood-Bane was holding Alec's hand and Rafe Lightwood-Bane was holding Magnus'. They were going to nursery and Magnus and Alec, married three years ago, were now waiting at the crossing to the school, their hands holding their son's in a firm grip.

"Look both ways," Alec said and the kids looked, gave a cheer that said no cars were coming, and the four of them crossed the road. Magnus caugt Alec's eyes as the kids bounded into the nursery. Magnus knew what he was thinking.

"Alexander..." Magnus started.

"Don't," Alec said and reached for Magnus' hand. Magnus let him take it and then they were at the crossing again. The same one as ten years ago. "Just look both ways now," Alec said and Magnus obeyed.

Once they were sure the whole road was clear, Alec and him made their way across, pressing closer.

"Alec, I know I put you through Hell that day. I should not have done that. I'm sorry," Magnus said softly.

"I can't help but think of that day everytime we have to cross this paticular road," Alec admitted.

"Oh Alec, my Alec," Magnus said, "That will never happen. I promise."

"I know, Magnus," Alec said back slowly, giving Magnus' hand a quick squeeze, "I know."

And with that, both of them carried on walking. Every so often Alec would have sharp memories of that day in high school, when Magnus had tried to kill or injure himself, but he always pushed them down, because now, both of them knew that they belonged to each other and only to each other.
