A/N Tissues at the ready, guys. I apologise in advance.......
Magnus was lounging on his sofa, a book held in one hand whilst the other folded Chairman Meow's ear down. Alec would be home any time now from patrol and seeing it was not even eight, Magnus was sure that the evening would bring many delights. Apparenly starting with a phone call from Clary.
"Hello, Bis-" Magnus was rudely cut off by Clary's tone, which was so urgent it could've made a clock speed up.
"Get to the Institute now, Magnus." And she hung up.
With an exasperated sigh, Magnus got off the couch and snapped his fingers. His pyjamas were replaced with very (emphasizing very) tight jeans and a fun-looking pastel batik T-shirt. He cheerily conjured a Portal and stepped through to the Institute but all his cheeriness left him with one glance at Clary.
"Are you hurt, Biscuit?" Magnus asked, concern radiating of him.
"N - no," Clary stammered, "Alec, he - he is."
Magnus felt every inch of him tighten up, his heart beating double-time, his fists clenching and unclenching.
"How bad is he injured?" Magnus inquired and Clary, shook her head, fell to her knees and started crying.
"CLARY, WHERE IS ALEXANDER?" Magnus screamed, fear drowning out reasonable thoughts. But it was not Clary who answered. It was Brother Zachariah, speaking into Magnus' mind the way Silent Brothers did.
Magnus. Your Alec. He is beyond saving. I have done everything I could. The poison was too strong.
Magnus felt his heart snap. Probably into million unfixable pieces. This was not happening. Alec was not leaving him.
"No, no, no," Magnus repeated, "No, let me look at him! Please! Jem -" Magnus closed his mouth in a tight line. This was Brother Zachariah, not Jem. Brother Zachariah turned to Magnus sharply at the mention of his original name. Magnus sucked in a breath.
I have truly done everything in my power. He is slowly fading into Heaven. Even your magic cannot bring him back. I am sorry.
Magnus screamed. He didn't know what else to do. His knees gave out and he fell to the floor.
"Surely you can do something, please!" Magnus begged.
I loved a girl. I still love her but I cannot be with her even if she loves me, which she probably doesn't. I cannot go to her aid if anything happens to her. I had a parabatai whom I had to watch die but whom I couldn't join. Do you think I do not know of your pain, Magnus? Do you not think I have done everything in my power, Magnus?
Tessa, the girl he loved and Will, the parabatai who he had to watch die, knowing he can never join him.
Magnus' head whirled and his eye-sight became blury. An image of Will, Jem and Tessa, all together, came to him, swiftly replaced by Alec's image and face. Magnus shook his head. Everything that Brother Zachariah said was true. The sacrifice he did for Tessa and Will, Magnus knew that Brother Zachariah would've done everything for Alec. As the knowledge hit him, so did tears.
Alec is with his parabatai. After, you should go say your goodbye. I'm sorry, Magnus, Brother Zachariah said.
Magnus was sure that he could see a hint of something in Brother Zachariah's posture. Magnus imagined what the Brother was going through. Whether Will's face and Alec's merged together, with the exact same colouring, those wonderous blue eyes, whether Tessa's smile creeped into his head - Magnus shook his head and stopped his tears from flowing. He would get through this. He had to. For Alec.
After composing himself, Magnus went and stood in front of Alec's bedroom. After a few moments, the door opened and out came Jace and Izzy. Jace looked worse than a corpse or a ghost and Izzy was still sobbing.
"Go on," Jace said meekly and Magnus went inside, to find Alec lying on the bed. Magnus sat down on one of the chairs near his beloved's bed.
"Hiya, gorgeous," Magnus muttered, trying to make his voice not crack; it was no use. Alec opened his brilliant blue eyes and looked at Magnus. Magnus could not help the tears that now fell freely.
"Magnus, hi," Alec said weekly, his own eyes pooling up with tears.
"Wh - What happened, Alexander?" Magnus asked, his tears now falling onto the white linen on Alec's bed.
"A demon. I was already fighting two and so was Jace. This one, it just got a good bite over my heart, so the Brothers can't get the venom out," Alec explained in gasps. And after looking at Magnus' face he added, "Don't exert your magic for me. I'm beyond saving."
Magnus shook his head frantically but knew that what Alec said was true. He said, "Alexander, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I've never loved anyone as much as I do you. And I think that when anyone dies, they cross into the after-life, whether that's Heaven or whatever. But I believe that they choose when to cross the shore between life and death. If that's the case, then promise me something. Promise me -"
Alec cut him off, already knowing what Magnus was going to say.
"Oh Magnus," Alec said and gave a small, sad smile, "Of course I'll wait. If there is a even the thinnest of magins that I need to cross, it'll be with you. Of course I'll wait, Magnus. I promise."
Magnus was now sobbing uncontrollably and Alec took one of Magnus' hands in his.
"You will?" Magnus asked, his voice no longer even or smooth.
"Yes, Magnus. I will wait." And then he arched his back slightly in pain and looked at Magnus. The look was one of finality, a final goodbye. Magnus leaned down, gave Alec the softest of kisses, one that was final and finishing, a contrast to thei first kiss, which was the start of something wonderful. This kiss was the end of everything.
And Magnus could see that Alec could no longer speak, could see that he was dying, so he called Alec's siblings, Simon and Clary into the room.
Izzy took the chair opposite Magnus and held Alec's other hand, sobbing. Jace, now crying as well, put his palm over Alec's heart and whispered in a ghost of a whisper: "If aught but death part thee and me, parabatai." And then he leaned down pressed his face over Alec's heart and said the word parabatai over and over again as if it gave him life. Magnus tightened his hold on Alec's hand.
Clary and Simon hung back in the doorway, both of them sheding tears. And Alec opened his eyes one last time, and saw everyone around him. Everyone that he had grown to love more than himself. He did not want to die, but if he had to, then he couldn't think of a better way to do it.
Magnus felt Alec's pulse decrease, could hear Jace's desperate cries and could feel himself shatter in ways he had never shattered before. Magnus closed his eyes and Alec's heart stopped beating, his pulse no longer there. Alexander was dead. And somehow, all their voices full of nothing but sorrow and grief, but wanting to give Alec the hounarble, Nephilim farewell he deserved, Magnus, Jace, Izzy, Clary and Simon said together:
"Ave atque vale, Alexander Lightwood."
A/N Hope you enjoyed? But there's not much to enjoy in the fact Alec dying? I honestly don't know why I am excellent at coming up with ideas where Alec dies and Magnus has to suffer or vice versa. But anyway..... assuming you've all forgiven me, please comment, vote and share? And I'll do a double update today, so keep your eyes out; it'll be fluffy and happy, I promise!
Love you, IC XXXXX 😶🙄😃
