CHAPTER 18

(Athena's POV)

"That went well" I breathe out and sit on the bed. Victor sits beside me and takes my hand into his and plays with my fingers "Your father sure seemed to be more concerned about you having a boyfriend, than you getting shot" he tells me.

I sigh knowing that Victor is right, I honestly expected him to panic a lot more about the bullet thing. But maybe he just masked his feelings because I was with victor.

"They can't know about werewolves, at least not for the time being" Victor deadpans.

"Okay" I reply and "You announced that you are my boyfriend" I say accusingly.

"Yes Ma'am, I am a very possessive Alpha and it takes all of my self control to not mark you and let everyone know that you are my mate. So, telling your dad that I am your boyfriend is the least I could do" he tells me unapologetically in a matter of fact tone.

I guess he is right so I let it slide. I mean if he was an Alpha from one of the books I have read, then he would have marked me by now and I will be happily planning my mating ceremony/ wedding. I wonder if he will ask me to marry him. Wait! Let's not go there now. I know he calls me Luna and took a bullet for me, but I cant help but doubt...

"Athena, we have intel on someone who could have had a hand in the attack, and sadly its someone you know" Victor says as he clears his throat.

"What who?"

"Max" he says and to say my world shook, would be an understatement.

"NO Victor, Max is a good friend, he is betty's groom and I think it must be a mistake... No, it cant be him. Also, he was there the day I woke up he didn't try to kill me then, but Betty was also there so I don't know what to think anymore" I tell him in a rush.

"Athena he was the only one who knew that you are my mate, even before my beta. I was telling him this while I asked him to come outside the other day. He knew about our date, he planned your visit here. I am not sure if betty is involved in this, but I feel that she doesn't know about any of this. He must have thought he will just get away with this. What he didn't know is that I will be your mate and I will not rest until I put whoever planned to attacked you, 6ft under the ground" Victor growls.

Out of instinct I run my hands up and down his back trying to calm him down and surprisingly it works. "But I really can't believe any of this victor" I tell him.

"You don't have to, let's go to the prison cells and find out the truth." He says as he gets up from the bed and helps me get up.

We are in the pack prison now, it is scary to think that I am inside a prison to investigate someone who may have wanted me dead. Please god let Max not be guilty. I think I have had my share of surprises and shocks in the last two days and I am so done.

Victor squeezes my hand lightly and gives me a reassuring nod and leads me inside a room, where I see a beaten-up Max. His dress is tattered, he has a black eye and looks like one of his arms is twisted too much that it may have broken. I flinch at the sight.

"Alpha, I didn't mean to do any harm... They said they will kill Betty, but I didn't know they would shoot Luna, I really didn't know... Please believe me" Max sobbed.

My heart sank. It was him all along and to think I trusted him...

"Speak" Victor replied.

"They told me they will kill betty if I don't do what they said. They were just asking about the whereabouts of Luna, its been a month now. I really didn't think they will try to kill her, if I had known I would have never helped them. In fact I tried to ward off the shooter" Max tells.

"That explains the first sound that we heard which alerted us Alpha" Z says.

"Who are 'they'?" Victor asks "I don't know Alpha, they just called me from different numbers at different times and controlled my actions. Once, I got a call where the man mentioned that I need to follow the "LORD'S" order. I don't know who the LORD is though. Betty is in danger, she is innocent, please protect her alpha. They threatened to kill her if I revealed anything, please Alpha, please Luna.." he begs.

"Stop it Max, why the hell are you calling me Luna. I get that Betty's life was in risk, If you had told me that betty was in danger I would have walked into the trap myself willingly, but no you just had to betray our trust. You clearly don't have any respect for me as a friend, or else you would have atleast warned me. 1 month Max, 1 month and you kept on lying to me and betty. So don't pretend that calling me Luna will do you any favor. The next day after everything happened, you just sat there in the hospital room with me and betty as if nothing happened. If it is so unreasonable for me to expect you to have told me before, you could have told me at the hospital atleast. I feel so cheated" I spat at him, I turn to Victor who was literally fuming "Victor, Betty... we should..." I begin, "I have sent guards to her room" he replies.

I see Victor's eyes glaze over. He is getting mindlinked. "What" he roars.

Everyone in the room flinches, he just holds my wrist and drags me out of the room, "Bring him with us" Victor tells Z. Why would Victor ask to bring Max with us?

"Babe" he takes a sharp breath, turns towards me and continues "Its Betty, she is dead."
