When it was too Late

Linh slammed her locker shut, frustrated. She was tired of her life. Foxfire, meet Tam and Wylie at home, go to bed, repeat.

Only recently she'd been getting secret admirer notes, and had no idea who it was. That had piqued her interest for the last three months, but today, all signs of connection had been cut off. Don't get her wrong, she was thankful to whoever it was, but they had promised to meet her by her locker the day before. It was strange.

She thought back to all the notes she had gotten. They were written in neat, even handwriting. They all rhymed and came with little bits of things that represented her, such as gummies shaped like murcats, a pendant like a drop of water, and a ballerina sugar crystal.

The notes themselves were little rhymes, such as

Your smile lights up the room

Your kindness lets me assume

We feel the same way towards each other

Lets just hope I don't have to cross your brother.

This was the first one. Slightly cringy, but Linh knew it by heart. Especially 'cause of that brother part.

Different ones were slightly confusing. The next one was the one which came with the murcat gummies.

Love of animals is something we share

Your twin brother owed you a dare

he tried to protest, but you had your mind set

you received a murcat as a pet

P.S: I was the one who convinced him

This one made Linh laugh. It was somewhat of a hint, and not really about the Secret Admirer liking her. The gummies were blue, her favorite color, and tasted like lushberry juice, one of her favorite treats.

The admirer seemed to know a lot about her.

Having memorized all the notes, Linh thought back to the third one. This one came in with the pendant.

Silver blue eyes

Sunny skies

We shared a moment in paradise

"best friends again, just like we were before"

But when will you start to realize, I see you as something more

P.S: do you like the necklace? it reminded me of your eyes

Linh recalled clearly having said that sentence. She wasn't sure to who, however. She had a lot of best friends. As Tam said, "you're way too nice." This admirer needed to improve on their poetry, but it was really sweet of them.

The next one she remembered, there was the one that came with a sugar crystal ballerina.

When I was at my worst,

you thought of me first

When I lay there in pain

you saw me the same

Yet you will never see me the way I see you

Maybe one day you will know it was fate

Just find me before it's too late.

Linh frowned. This seemed as more a warning than a note. But-

When they lay there disfigured.

She hadn't been afraid to approach.

The note came with a sugar crystal ballerina. Like the one she had created with her hydrokinetic powers.

She finally knew who it had been.

Her imparter lit up. Hail from Tam Song. She lifted it to her face, to be able to barely recognize the person on the other end. Tam's usually pale face was flooded with color and his eyes were puffy.

Linh realized he was crying. "What's wrong, Tam?" she said softly.

He shook his head, then said in a choked voice, "You'd better come. It's Wylie. The Neverseen got him again. And... and Bullhorn.. he-" another tear rolled down her cheek. Linh abruptly ended the hail, tears of her own threatening to burst forth.

No.

This wasn't happening. It wasn't real. Yet as her legs carried her up to Elwin's, a different, much more horrible truth settled into her head.

Wylie lay on a cot, looking much worse than he had last time. His skin was raw, and he was bleeding. Elwin seemed to have moved aside to get something else.

All of their friends were gathered around him. Biana was shaking, leaning back onto Fitz. Silent grief overtook them, while most of the rest were openly crying.

Linh stoned herself as she had done last time, and opened her hand. A ballerina, a murcat, and a necklace. Sophie looked up. "Linh, I don't think that's going to work anymore."

But Linh ignored her, pressing on. "Wylie. Do you hear me? Do you understand? I figured it out, and you can wake up now. I have a lot to ask you about. We need to talk."

Wylie's eyes slightly cracked open. He coughed out blood. "Hey Linh. I see you got my notes. I'm sorry, I was going to meet you, but... then they got me."

Pure hatred towards the Neverseen flooded through Linh. "You're sorry? I'm sorry. I was so oblivious to the fact that it was you. The notes had enough hints."

He smiled. "Just the same amount of spirit, I see. So, before I go, tell me. What were you going to tell me if I had met you at your locker today?"

"I would have told you that... I love you too."

Instead of looking excited, his expression slightly fell. "I wish we could have more time together. But I can't. I know I'll be leaving soon."

Linh couldn't control her emotions any further. "NO! You're not going anywhere! Don't say that! Look at how many people are counting on you to come back. We need you."

But he just shook his head. "Sophie, continue Team Valiant without me. I have a feeling you've found your newest member."

Any amount of glory would never be sufficient to make up for this. "No, no, no. Come on."

But Wylie had almost quieted completely. One last time, he spoke. "I warned you in one of my notes. Find me before it was too late. You did. But you realized when it was too late."
