sometimes it takes time to know who other people are
to understand that we cannot always predict their path
sometimes the realisation comes in late
sometimes it offers up a clean slate
remember, loyal one, that you can breathe
remember, loyal one, you must try to see
remember loyal one, they will not cease without you
remember, loyal one, not to forget about YouAfter Taehyung hangs up, and the conversation ends, Jungkook sits at the breakfast bar for ages, staring into the bottom of his mug of coffee, as if he expects it to offer him the answers he needs. As if he expects to read the solution in the dregs, like a fortune teller reading the tea leaves.
Eventually, however, the pull of sleep drifts over him at last, and he walks sluggishly through the cottage, to his bedroom, to quickly brush his teeth and then fall into bed.
For the first time in forever, he's dreaming almost the moment his head hits the pillow. Something about the effort of the last few days has been overwhelming in a new way, and it's been exhausting to pretend like he's not scared of any of it. Like he's not bothered at all. Like there's nothing unusual about any of it, even if there is.
Jungkook is woken, several hours later, by an inquisitive Miri. The wet nose poking at him is enough to force him out of his dreams, as the poodle-cross snuffles around on his bed, pawing at him to get him to wake up. He opens his eyes to see the fluffy white tail wagging right in front of his nose, and for a moment he's disorientated, until he remembers where he is.
A fond smile crosses over his face, and then he rolls his eyes, sitting up and leading the small dog through the cottage back to the kitchen, fixing up a breakfast for her and then grabbing an apple out of the fridge for himself. She follows him cheerfully, almost bouncing through the cottage, attacking her breakfast the moment he places it on the floor.
Whilst the two of them are eating, Taehyung's words from last night begin to force their way back into the forefront of Jungkook's mind. In the light of a new day, the ideas that the orange was offering make a lot more sense than before. Maybe it's the impact of a good night's rest, maybe it's just the fact that the idea has sunken in a little bit better over time.
Either way, there's something beginning to turn in his brain, something that continues to spin around in his subconscious as he takes a shower and then prepares to walk Miri for the day, so that she's not left without any exercise or interaction with the outside world.
Even when he's greeted with the outside air, chilly and smelling that odd metallic tang that comes with the spring rain, he's not pulled out of his thoughts. He's only broken out of his thoughts when the first raindrop falls onto his nose, and he looks up to see a dark grey sky. The coolness of the water on his skin, or maybe the powerful tug of a tiny poodle cross, who really doesn't want to be caught in a rainstorm, is what makes him finally snap out of it.
Jungkook pauses for a moment, pulling Miri back, staring out over the world, at the shadows of the clouds above, at the dullness of the trees and the park he's found himself in. In this moment in the middle, the split second of calm before the storm, he takes a deep breath. Somehow, for an instant, the air is clearer than before.
And then he turns around, and follows Miri home, letting her practically drag him through the park in the direction of his little cottage, crossing over roads and finding the quickest route back, as the weather slowly turns from gentle to violent. Just as they step inside, it's like a switch has been flicked, and the rain starts to fall from the sky in sheets.
Jungkook kneels down, unclips Miri's lead and harness, and she immediately trots off further into the house, shaking off the water as she goes. He sighs, glancing over his shoulder at the rain beating at the front door. "Only just made that," he mutters to himself, or maybe to his dog, sighing in relief.
