[ Chris' POV ]
I wake up to a buzzing pillow. I groan and roll over, squeezing my eyes shut after opening them slightly. For how long have I been sleeping? I went to bed after Anna went to Jane's. Before she went to Jason, my subconscious reminds me again. Ugh, it's not that I'm bothered by him, but he really needs to stay out of my way.
The phone goes off again and I snatch it from under my pillow. Why would I even put my phone under my fucking pillow? I don't bother reading the name and press the green button.
"Hey, bro, you getting laid or something? Why did you ignore my calls and texts?" I hear Ryan's voice blasting through the speaker and his laugh afterwards. I narrow my eyes and put the phone on speaker. Why is the screen so goddamn bright?
"Make this quick, my head is fucking killing me. Got too drunk last night and almost spilled our secrets to Anna," I groan and bury my face in the pillow.
"Wait, like the plan and stuff?" Ryan sounds worried. He has always been the worried one of our group. The one that cares too much. Almost got him killed one time.
"Yeah, I fucked up. We're like fighting and stuff," I murmur, "she's fucking sensitive. I thought, I'll bring her to a party, get her drunk, ask her about her grandfather and then fuck her, but geez."
"Shit, man. Should I tell Jack that our plan is going slower than we thought?" Ryan asks.
[ Jessica's POV ]
I have to Anna about Chris' intentions. I owe her this, I think to myself as I drive to Jane's house. I ignore the buzzing of my phone. It's probably Chris, trying to convince me not to tell her. Well, fuck him. Anna's just an innocent girl who probably doesn't even know about the mess in her family. I park my car in front of Jane's house, slam the car door shut and run to the front door. I ring the doorbell eight times, before I hear someone yelling, "I'M FUCKING COMING!" and an irritated Jane opens the door.
"Jessica? Why are you..." Jane trails off, her eyebrows knit together. "How did you know...?"
"I'm sorry for coming here, but-but there's something important I have to tell Anna," I say quickly, tripping over my words.
"Uh yeah, of course. Come in," Jane looks at me like I'm a lunatic and screams, "Anna! Jessica is here and she's looking for you!"
I step in and try to calm down. This is the moment she gets to know the truth and it's probably the last time she wants to see me or Chris. My phone keeps buzzing and buzzing and I put the stupid thing on silence. I need to tell her everything with no distraction.
"Jessica?" Anna comes walking down the stairs, a girl with long brown hair, Chanel I think, follows her. "What's wrong?"
"There's something really really important I have to tell you. Now," I say, trying to remain calm.
"Chris is a criminal," I flat out say when we sit down on Jane's couch in her living room. She and Chanel both left and went to Jane's room, but they're probably eavesdropping, not like it bothers me. "He's faking everything."
"What? Is this a joke? Because I'm mad at him?" Anna raises her eyebrows. I knew that she would think this is a joke.
"Do you know why we moved here?" I ask and lean back.
"Because of your dad? Chris doesn't tell me that much about his past, said that he hung out with the wrong crowd," Anna says and looks down.
"He's still involved with them. And that's not the only reason why we moved. We moved because he almost got caught by the police on time. It wasn't safe for him anymore!" I say, trying to convince her.
"And your mom just agreed?" Anna raises her eyebrows again and stares at my phone, which is on the table. It keeps lighting up due to Chris' texts and he probably informed the rest of the gang.
I sigh, "She doesn't know about his record, he's always careful. But the last time he did a job, he almost got caught. It was a setup. They wanted to figure out what the secret is of your grandpa's..." This must be really overwhelming and confusing for her. Poor girl, she has to get involved in this, just because of her grandfather.
"Who are 'they'? And what the hell has my grandpa to do with this? I don't understand," Anna groans and brushes a hand through her hair.
"Let me explain," I take a deep breath. "We moved from Chicago to LA. Chris wasn't involved with anyone, back then. We met this crew, the usual badboys of the school, but there was more to them. They live together back in LA, in this big ass house. They work for a man, a well known criminal, named Bernardo. He's an international Italian criminal and works for himself. He uses Chris and his gang to do all his dirty work."
"I still don't see what my grandpa's role is in all of this? And mine?" Anna interrupts.
"Half a year ago or so, Bernardo had a conflict with a big mafia. They were so convinced that Bernardo knew something he shouldn't, they threatened him and the other guys. It's about a secret cabin somewhere in Brazil and the mafia thought that Bernardo knew where it was. So, they said, in exchange for their freedom, they want the exact address of that cabin and the money that's in it. And this is where your grandfather comes in. Turns out, the cabin belongs to Christian Parker. Your grandfather's grandfather. The Italian mafia dug deep and the gang thought that we would get to your grandpa if they sent someone to talk to you. And it was the perfect timing, mom wanted to move away anyways," I say. Anna's eyes are big, her mouth open and her expression shocked. This was probably not what she had in mind when she started dating Chris.
"I'm sorry for not telling you sooner," I say sincerely. "I've always hated the fact they are involved in all this. Especially since I dated the leader of the gang, Jack." I haven't spoken to Jack in a long time, not after I left.
"I can't fucking believe this," Anna says slowly while shaking her head. "Am I caught up in some weird mafia related soap?"
"It's only gonna get worse," I smile sadly, my voice full of sympathy.
