[ Anna's POV ]

After a nervous 10 minutes of ducking behind the car in the parking lot, Jack and Chris finally step out of the motel room. A breath I was holding in escapes my lips and I stand up straight.

"Shiiit, we got 'em," Jack grins and Chris carefully closes the door behind him, before they sprint to the black minivan we're standing next to.

The wind has now gotten crazy, the branches of the huge tree above us coming dangerously close to the minivan. I have no idea whose idea it was to have a big ass tree in the middle of a parking lot, but that's beside the point.

Sammy notices me staring at the hanging branch and looks up, "It looks like it will come falling down if we don't get into this car right now."

"Hurry the fuck up then," Jack yells over the storm and unlocks the car, before throwing our bags in the trunk. I glance over to the motel, hoping that our not so friendly neighbors won't notice that we're trying to steal their car. It's something I'm completely against, but I don't want to spend another minute in that motel. Jessica has spent the last few minutes complaining about how this is completely against the law, but Sammy shrugged it off and said that she should be used to it by now. Since they're criminals and all.

"I will drive," Chris puts up his hand and Jack throws the car keys at him. He opens the car door, letting Jessica and Sammy, before he jumps in himself.

"Are you okay?" Chris says as he puts the last bags in the trunk of the van.

"Yeah... I just don't feel comfortable stealing other people's cars," I let out a weird laugh and sigh, walking to the other side of the car, before opening the passenger's seat and hopping in.

I make myself comfortable in the seat and yawn, I really should catch some sleep. I was just about to close my eyes when Jessica startles me by putting her hand on my shoulder, "Is that someone...?" she trails off and I turn around to look at her. She squints her eyes at something in the distance and I let out a gasp when I see a figure open the door of the room next to ours. Is it that rude man from earlier? It couldn't be... He was fast asleep as Jack told us.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit," Chris curses and starts the car, the engine roaring like crazy.

"Drive, drive, drive!" Sammy yells from the backseat and I can hear Jessica's heavy breathes. My own breath gets hitched in my throat when the man runs towards us and stops a few feet in front of the car, "If you step out right now, I won't kill you!" He grabs a black object from his pocket and it takes me a couple of seconds to realize it's a gun. Shit, this is getting serious.

"Let's just get out of the car, guys," Jessica sobs behind me and I hear Jack whisper soothing things in her ear, trying to calm her down.

"Not happening," Chris throws his foot ont the gas pedal and I jerk backwards from the sudden movement. I feel Jessica bump into my seat and I look with a panicked look to Chris as he takes a deep breath and looks at me, "I know what I have to do. Don't worry, okay?"

"You've made a huge mistake!" the man screams and points his gun towards Chris.

My heart starts to beat like crazy when the huge tree branch above us makes a snap sound and everything that follows seems to happen in a split of a second.

The man looks up and takes a few steps towards our car, trying to get away from under the tree, as Chris drives the van backwards on full speed. Chris grabs my arm and Jessica gasps, knowing what's to come. The man's guns slips out of his hand and with a heavy thump, which you can feel in your whole body, the biggest branch of the tree falls on the ground, right on top of the man.

I slap my hand against my mouth and squeeze Chris' hand with the other, while my whole body shakes from the horrific event in front of my eyes.

After a couple seconds of silence, Sammy sighs behind us, "Great. Let's hope nobody saw that."

"Are you out of your fucking mind, Chris?" Jessica yells with a hoarse voice.

"I didn't kill him and what other options did I have?" Chris exclaims and tears his cold hand away from my shaky arm. He clenches his jaw and drives away from the motel, onto the highway. He turns on the headlights and Jack reaches his hand out to mess around with the buttons on the dashboard.

"He was in a bad place at a bad time. It was an accident, calm down. We never saw anything. The receptionist didn't register our names so we're okay," Sammy says and I hear him dig in his backpack, "What is the address we're headed to again?"

"Uhh...," I let out a shaky breath and sniff, turning around to look at him, "The notebook is in my handbag."

"Well, where's your handbag then?" Sammy asks and throws his beanie off, before brushing his hand through his hair, a few strands fall back on his forehead.

"I think I threw it in the trunk..." I trail off, not so sure when I say it out loud. Oh no, what if I left it in the room? Shit, it could still be there... Shit.

"Do you want to check if it's in the trunk or not?" Jack groans and rolls his eyes. I still don't know how Jessica puts up with him. He's more annoying than Chris.

"Yes," I turn around in my seat and look at Chris, who's still focused at the road and is acting like he doesn't hear us, "Chris, will you stop the car for a sec?"

"I swear to god, if you left your notebook at the motel..." he frowns and pulls the car over. There are no other cars on the highway, probably cause the storm is too dangerous for cars to be driving. We didn't make a very smart decision.

"I will look for it, hold on," I say, praying that I took the bag with me. I hop out of the car and Chris follows me, opening the trunk.

"It's here!" I yell over the wind when I spot my leather bag and I grab it, clutching it to my body. Chris nods, closing the trunk again. You know that feeling when you're praying for something and it actually happens? Happiness is the word I'm searching for. Although, I just saw a man get killed by a tree branch. No, no. He didn't die. I'm sure he didn't die. That branch wouldn't have killed him. Right?

"Give me that address," Chris says when we step in the car again and buckles his seatbelt.

The black minivan we're in has a modern navigation system built in. The car is very similar to the van Bucks drove. Only a little smaller and there's a faint cigarette smell lying around. I also noticed a small wifi sign on the inside of the car door when we stepped in. The owner of this car must be pretty successful if he can afford such an expensive car. There must be people looking for that man if he doesn't show up after a few days. The man we killed. No, no. We didn't kill anyone. He didn't die.

"Anna?" Jessica snaps her fingers in front of my eyes and I shake my head, trying to get rid of the stupid voice in my head, which keeps saying we just killed an innocent man. And his wife lies there, inside their motel room, sleeping. Not knowing what's going on. Oh my god, his wife. If she even is his wife, I mean. But she must be quite special to him. What will she think when she sees her man lying on the ground? And there's no hospital nearby. If he's even alive. Oh god, what have we done?

I'm well aware of the worried look on Chris' face as he glances at my pale face and Jack's hands as he grabs my bag and starts looking for the notebook himself, but I keep playing the scene over and over again.

"Where is that goddamn notebook? It's not in your handbag?" Jack yells and pulls his hair in a frustrated manner.
