Chap 31.

[ Anna's POV ]

It's ten P.M. when I hear my phone ring on the wooden nightstand next to my bed. I sit up from my bed and look at Chris. We were watching 'Modern Family' in my room and I was actually enjoying Chris' presence. I could feel that he was being genuine this time.

Jack, Ryan, Chanel and Jessica are out clubbing somewhere. Jack and Jessica patched things up and she broke up with Jason. He still hasn't tried to contact me. Not that it's a big problem, but I feel bad for him after Chris slammed the door in his face.

"It's your mom...," Chris says when he picks up my new phone from the nightstand and frowns, "She's finally calling back." I got a new phone as soon as possible. It's the 21st century, what can I say? I can't live without a phone.

I furrow my eyebrows and grab my phone from Chris. I swipe my thumb across the screen and put the iPhone against my ear, "Hey, mom? I've been calling you this afternoon..." I decided to give in and call my mom this afternoon, to ask if she could pass me grandad's phone number. Ryan's story about his boss really got to me.

"I know, I know," I hear my mom sniff and she sighs, "Something terrible happened and um... I'm at the hospital right now, in Queens. In Long Island."

"The hospital? Are you okay? Are you in Long Island with your friend?" I ask worriedly and jump out of my bed. My mom told us that she would be staying with her friend in Long Island. She wanted to clear up her head or something like that. Chris looks at me with furrowed eyebrows and brushes his hand through his hair, before he mouths "what's wrong?" to me.

I shake my head and listen to my mom's shaky voice, "It's your grandparents... They wanted to visit us and they got in a car accident on their way to Jessie's home, where I'm staying and now they're here... I just don't know. Don't tell your dad and Ella please. It's kind of sudden, they wanted to surprise me and you and Ella."

"What the... Are they okay? Should I come?" I ask concerend and start walking back and forth in my room, stepping on all the clothes that I have laying on the floor. My grandparents used to live in the Philipines and they recently moved to a small village in The Netherlands. They've always loved traveling and that's the main reason why we didn't see them that much, they were constantly moving.

"Yes, well... Taking the train isn't the best idea this late...," my mom hesitates and I sigh, "It's okay... I'm hopping on the first train to Long Island. Chris is coming too... I will be there soon mom. Please hang in there and text me if there's news...," I say and quickly walk over to my closet, grabbing a bag, while I ramble on, "I'm packing my bag right now and Chris is coming too..."

"Thank you so much, Anna. I'm sorry that it's so sudden... Your grandparents wanted to surprise you, after all those years... But please don't tell your dad and Ella. I don't want them worrying. I'm sorry Anna," mom whispers and I can hear her sobbing, which makes me even more sad.

"Don't be sorry, I'll be there as soon as possible. Expect me in two hours or so. I love you," I say quietly and hang up the phone before she can hear me cry. I throw my phone on the bed and drop my bag on the hard wooden floor. I put my hands over my eyes and start crying. My shoulders shake and there's some weird, high noise escaping from my throat. I brush my hand through my long hair and let out a shaky sigh.

"Hey, hey... It's okay. What happened, baby? What did she say?" Chris asks and stands up from the bed to walk over to me. He pulls me into his hard chest and puts his arms around my head, due to our height difference, and rocks us back and forth. I love it when he's caring and sweet like this. If he continues to be so nice, I'd think about making it official with him. Wait, why am I thinking about him? I just heard that my grandparents are in the hospital, because they were in an accident? What is wrong with me? Get your shit together Anna.
