October
Last month Chad showed me the floor below his and there were a few things that I requested be done to the floor and he made sure that happened. While the renovations happened my team and I worked in the conference rooms. It was lucky that I didn't hire too many people.
The conference room would have been cramped otherwise. I did look at getting interns into the company and they start work today.
Jessica walks over to me as I press the button for the lift. She's wearing a black and white pencil skirt with a white blouse and a black jacket over the top. Her hair is piled on top of her head. A smile spreads across her face. "Good morning, Miss Donoghue. How are you?"
At least she has manners.
A smile spreads across my face. "I'm good. Are you excited to see what our floor looks like?"
"Yes," she pushes her purse higher up on her shoulder. "This is the first time I've worked for a company that's a start-up. I hope we have some good clients come through. I heard that you kept some of the ones from you're old town."
"I did keep them. They wanted the best and that's me. A lot of people screwed up the small businesses and they knew that I wasn't going to do the same. A few clients are coming through today and you're going to take care of their books. You have one year worth of stuff to go through."
She grumbles a bit. "I wasn't expecting to have to go through an entire year of stuff, but if that's what I have to do. So be it."
At least she's got some enthusiasm when it comes to the work that needs to be done.
"Once you catch up on the stuff from last year. Things will be easier for next year as you'll be updating those books monthly. I don't want things to get too far behind when it comes to keeping my client's books up to date."
A smile spreads across her face. "Sounds good, boss, Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure," I hesitantly say, as I don't know what she's going to ask. "I hope it's an easy one."
"When do you give out holiday pay?"
"What do you mean?" I'm not trying to play dumb with her. I just want to make sure that we're on the same page with her question. It's not the first that time that's I've misinterpreted what someone was asking me before. That's why I want her to clarify what she's asking about.
"Just say I go on holiday. Do you pay for that leave or don't I get anything."
Oh, I get where she's coming from.
"You have to work for me for a year before you get that pay and you get 6 weeks off for a holiday. Also, sick pay will be part of that."
"Thanks, also what about Christmas and New Year? My family and I are away for the holidays.
"We're not open for two and half weeks between that. You can go on holiday."
The door opens and we step into the elevator. I press the button for our floor and we head towards it. Jessica talks to me about herself. Which makes things easy, since we're going to be working together.
As soon as we step off the elevator there's a group of people with congratulation balloons and standing amongst them is Chad.
He moves towards me. "Hey, Baby. Thanks for letting me come up here alone. If I let you come the surprise would be ruined." Turning his attention to the other people in the room he says. "From left to right we have. Curtis, Heather, Dwayne and Lily. They are your interns. When I advertised for some their names were top picks for the University they attend. I know you have spots available for them. Take care of them."
Placing my lips on his, I say. "Thanks, Chad. This means a lot that you're still looking for people to help me run the company." Lowering my voice. "Who should I get to run this place when I go on maternity leave?"
"That is something we should discuss another time. Right now you need to be the boss and tell you're new employees what's expected of them." he hugs me before pulling my sister away. Leaving me alone with my employees.
Turning towards everyone I smile at them. "Hi, I'm Eliza Donoghue. I was thinking that we could go around the room and get to know each other. So, I'll start. As you all know I'm Eliza. I have been practising accounting since I was eighteen. When I took on my father's books at the club he was running. I did remote learning for my degree and it gave me more time to look after the people I care for."
Jessica moves a piece of hair that's fallen into her face. "I'm Jessica Henry. I've been in accounting for five years. I also did remote learning for my degree as I was a mother to three beautiful boys."
The guy next to Jessica has dark hair and blue eyes. He looks around the room before saying. "I'm Mason Jarrett and I come from a long line of Accountants. I was supposed to join my father's firm, but at the last minute, I told him that I want to earn a name for myself. Which is why I took the job here. I believe this place is what I need."
A smile spreads across my face as I get to know a little more about the people that I will be spending my time with. After we introduce ours give them the rules, before giving my employees their clients. While the interns make coffee and get what we need.
My phone starts to ring and I look at it 'Nina' flashes across the screen. Picking it up I say. "What you want Nina?"
Nina: My husband has found me and he's forcing me to go home with him. Can you come and help?
Me: I'm sorry I can't. This is my first day in my new office. I'll send someone for you.
Nina: I don't think they will be here quick enough. Besides you're the only person that can help me.
Me: The person I'm sending is close to you. He will get there before Ronnie takes you.
Nina: Okay,
Me: Bye,
Hanging up I call Chloe. She answers after the phone rings a couple of times.
Chloe: Hello, this is Chloe.
Me: Hey, Chloe. It's Eliza. We met a couple of months ago.
Chloe: I remember. What do you need?
Me: How do you know I need something?
Chloe: Friends call me once in a while. Mostly I get phone calls from people wanting things. Just tell me what you need.
Me: My sister is having problems with her husband and he's about to take her away from her new house.
Chloe: Give me the address and we'll take care of it.
I give her the address and then we hang up.
Lifting the phone to my ear I call Nina and she answers after a couple of rings.
Nina: Thanks, Sis. The people you sent are here and they are kicking him out of the house. I'll talk to Ronnie in a couple of days. Once everything has settled.
Me: Okay, if you need somewhere to go. Give Kat a call. She'll take you in.
With that said I hang up and lean against my seat.
When are they going to learn that I can't do everything for them? Nina is a grown woman and she needs me to help her out with this.
