Eighteen years later...
Aspen and Luna walk through the front door laughing and joking about something when I step into the foyer. "Hello, girls."
"Hey, Mom." Aspen says. She looks towards her cousin. "I'll meet you up in my room in ten minutes. I need to talk to Mom for a second."
"Okay," she starts to head for the stairs before stopping and turning towards Mom. "Hey, Aunt, Eliza. Go easy on her." With that she runs up the stairs.
Turning towards my daughter I say. "What does your cousin mean by that?"
"Can we talk in the living room? I don't want to have an audience when I talk to you." She leads the way to the living room.
I wish Chad was here. He'd do better with whatever news my seventeen almost eighteen year old daughter needs to tell me.
Just then the front door opens and Chad walks in. "Honey, I'm home."
Before I close the door to the living room I say. "I'm in the living room talking to our daughter. I think you should join us."
Aspen walks over to the couch and sits. She starts wringing her fingers together. A habit she does when she's nervous.
Over the years I can tell when she has important news to tell us and when she shared something we didn't want to know about like her losing her virginity to Kian.
She's been dating that boy since she was sixteen and has been friends with him since she was a kid.
It wasn't a surprise when we learnt that the two were together. He was protective of her all the time and as they got older his protectiveness got worst. He put a kid in the hospital after he kissed my daughter without her consent.
When things happen to Aspen he's close by to make sure that things never get out of hand.
Chad enters the room and closes the door behind him. He moves me with him to the couch and we turn our attention to our daughter. "What's going on princess?"
She looks between us. "Dad, Mom. I don't know how to say this."
Standing up I move over to my daughters side and place my hand on top of hers. "You can tell us anything. We'll be there for you no matter what."
"Okay," she looks at her hands and says. "I'm pregnant."
Shit, I wasn't expecting that.
Dropping my hand from hers I stand and pace the room.
I'm not ready to be a Grandmother and I'm sure that my eldest daughter isn't ready to be a mother. She has her while life ahead of her.
"Mom," Aspen whispers. "Please say something."
I wish I could. Right now I'm too shocked to say anything to her.
"Aspen," Chad says. "Go up to your room. Give us a moment to process this news. We'll be up shortly to talk to you."
"Okay," she pulls her phone out of her pocket and starts typing on it. Tears begin to fall down her face and all I want to do is grab her and pull her into my arms.
However, I just let her leave.
"Eliza," Chad places his hands on either side of my face. "We need to deal with this as a family. I know it's a shock to hear our daughter is pregnant, but she knew what sex could lead to. I don't think Kian and Aspen would intentionally do something like this."
"Chad," I look my husband in the eye and say. "I'm at a total loss of what to do. I know she wants to go to college and have a career. How is she going to do all that with a child?"
"She has us, Eliza. We're going to get through this as a family. For one I know you won't let her do this alone."
He's right I won't let her do this alone. Mom wouldn't have let me do it alone either. She was my rock.
And in this moment I miss her dearly.
