*???'s POV*
'Your sister?'
I nod. 'Yupp,'
'What's her name? Is she famous? Is she rich?' came the gossipy and curious voices of my two best friends.
'Ehh, I'm not sure,' I scratch the back of my head.
'What do you mean 'I'm not sure'?' asked a brunette on my left.
'Ehh, I'm not sure,' I repeat, feeling more stupid by the second.
I brush the exciting and weird topic away as the school bell rings, signaling the end of school. From there, I pack up my ratted textbook and started heading for the bus stop outside the school gates where several dozen students were waiting already.
For some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about what Alex and Jessie said.
'Why exactly am I not sure?'
The thought stayed on my mind the rest of my journey home and even as I procrastinated in my room after forgetting to say hello to my brothers who waited for me to get home. In fact, I don't think I thought about anything else until dinner, where my dad snapped me out of it.
'Emily. EMILY!' he yelled, making me jump.
I almost fell out of my chair but ,luckily, I steadied myself just in time as he pushed his glasses back up, laughing at me.
'You've been completely out of it since you got home. Is everything okay?' my dad asked from across the small round dining table, smiling with a hint of concern.
'Huh? Oh, it's nothing. Just thinking of something,' I reply casually.
There was a sound of disgruntled agreement from my left and I turn to face my youngest brother.
'Doing anything for the first time must be tough,' Liam says, looking innocently at me.
My other brother, Oliver, also laughed and said 'How are your remedial classes going, Emily?'
I flush with anger and embarrassment as I retaliate. 'Oh yeah? How is your specialized tuition going? And your personalized lessons?'
I shot back at them and my parents just laugh. 'I suppose there won't be any geniuses in this generation,'
My mum sends a kind smile at me and I look down at my feet as my mind trailed back to my previous thoughts.
'Hey dad?' I look over to my stoic dad who smiled at me.
'Yes?'
'I was thinking...,'
There was a round of giggles from my brothers but I roll my eyes, ignoring them.
'... about my sister,'
There was a silence and a chink of the silverware. I faced my dad but the image on his face showed something I've never seen before. He was caught by surprise and that was strange. My dad, Jonathon Lim, always calm and mentally stable, the current highest-paid architect in Toronto, was surprised.
But that just made me more curious and I turned to my mother, who coincidentally disappeared.
'Mum?' I call out.
'Umm, yes, I'm in the k-kitchen, sweetheart. I'm putting away my dish,'
'O-oh ok,' I mutter out and I turn back to my dad.
'Y-your sister?' he repeated.
I nod.
'Wait,'
