Chapter 24

I woke up upon hearing a phone call. Sunod-sunod iyon kanina pa pero tumigil rin kalaunan. Now that it rang again, I decided to pick it up, still sleepy and cranky. 

"Why do you keep calling me, Kit?" masungit kong salubong sa pinsan.

Normally, he would laugh it off the way I answered him.

"Ano?" I probed when he didn't answer.

I saw on my wall clock that it's still six a.m in the morning. Mas lalo akong nainis pero narinig ko ang buntong-hininga at pag-iingat ng pinsan.

"Do you still not know about the news?"

Kumunot ang noo ko, bahagyang napabangon mula sa kama.

"What news?" me, a bit skeptical.

"It was about Draia," he started carefully.

Tuluyan na akong napabangon at kumawala sa kumot.

"What happened?" kinakabahan kong tanong.

"She's in the hospital."

Draia dela Cuest, my best friend got herself a drink that has a drug on it. Mabilis akong pumuta sa hospital na sinabi sa'kin ni Kit.

Using the topdown, the gift that I've got from my parents, I drove myself there with only wearing a loose jacket and a shorts. Nandoon na daw kanina pa sina Yao kaya nagmadali na ako sa pagbihis.

She was set-up by these specific group that their family currently investigating. Nagpupustahan daw sa karera at iyon, pina-inom ng can beer na may drugs.

I couldn't process it. Hindi 'ko maintindihan pa'no napunta si Draia sa karera at pustahan na gano'n but this is not the first time she became strange. And I think, this was started since we got back from La Union.

Surprisingly, that was the only summer that I got a chance to spent here in the Philippines. I graduated the Senior's life and Dad gave me a reward; to be with them here during this summer, with my friends and luckily, Draia made a plan.

"Busy ako. Nag sho-shooting range," kibit balikat ni Draia nang natanong ko siya isang gabi.

She's telling a truth but I can sense that she's also hiding something from me. I know I should be also guilty because I do the same thing but... parang ibang usapan naman kasi ang sa kanya.

"Hmm... sino kasama mo?" lapit ko at naniningkit na ang mga mata.

My plan was to stay here for a while after we ate dinner but when I heard someone came into their garage, a sound of his familiar Fortuner, I decided to just go home instead. I'm afraid I might bump myself on Austin. I don't want that because I'm scared and I don't exactly understand why.

Hanggang nga dito sa hospital. Sadyang wala lang akong naging choice dahil may problema ang kaibigan. I want to be with Draia and help her in any way I could help her. Even if it means, the possibility of seeing Austin here is not that impossible.

And I was right. I went outside to check on my car. Lumabas rin sina Kit matapos kaming naka-pasok sa room ni Draia para bumili ng makakain. Papalapit na 'ko sa pintuan nang iniluwa rin si Austin sa elevator 'di kalayuan sa kwarto ni Draia.

Preoccupied of what's all happening, I took the stairs earlier to think some thoughts kaya hindi kami nagkasabay d'yan sa loob. I thank God because of that.

Lumunok ako at nagdalawang isip kung tutuloy pa ba 'ko. But why not right? Anong why not, Addie? For sure papasok rin 'yan si Austin sa room ni Draia! And so? Let him be! Kaibigan ka, kapatid siya! Pero walang tao sa loob kaya kayong dalawa lang kung sakali!
