33: the final round

Y/n could tell Yuno was still frustrated at the fact that he wouldn't be able to fight Asta, as the latter was injured and his team's match ended in a draw. She could only hope that he would remain focused and keep from injuring himself like their childhood friend. After all, they were going up against a Magic Knight squad captain.

As the match begins, the fight splits into two fronts. Noelle and Y/n try to protect their crystal from Nils and Ruben, while Yuno faced off against Rill by himself.

Yuno sent a powerful spiraled wind attack, which left Nils and Ruben in awe. Of course, the cheery captain painted over the spell, countering it effortlessly.

"Yuno was it?" Rill said with a cheerful laugh, "Your spirit magic was so cute. It was actually entertaining!"

Yuno frowned. Beside him, Belle bickered in his ear. "What the heck is his problem? No matter what we do, he just paints a little doodle over it and seals it away."

"Belle, let's do it," Yuno said.

"Huh?" The sylph questioned.

Yuno closed his eyes in focus as he channeled his mana round him. From learning Mana skin and working one-on-one with Y/n, he managed to achieve the same skill she did. By controlling his mana within and containing it within himself, he was able to use his trump card.

"I had a plan to use this against Asta in the finals," Yuno admitted, "but since my opponent is a Magic Knight's captain, it won't go to waste."

His mana swirled around him. His immense internal capacity stunned everyone. Belle began to merge with him, her magic amplifying his already powerful magic.

"Asta...I'm gonna blow past you here!" Yuno thought. "Because as always...I will be the one to beat you. Spirit Absorption: Spirit Dive!"

Yuno's left arm became cloaked with green. A green circle of connected crosses appeared around his wrist with a green wing appearing from the left side of his back. A green half-crown of connected crosses appeared on the left side of his head. His mana created an intense pressure as it visibly radiated off of him.

Rill only smiled wider in excitement. "Amazing- you're amazing Yuno!" The young male exclaimed. The sight of his opponent's magic fueled his desire to paint even more. "I feel like I could paint anything!"

His pallet and paint brush manifested in his hands. With a few quick swipes, he painted a creature that had the head and torso of a woman, bat-like wings, two bird-like legs, and a long scaly tail. It was terrifyingly entrancing.

"Wind spirit magic: Spirit Storm!"

"Painting Magic: Scream of the Mystical Dragon Vouivre!"

Two powerful blasts from each party collided. Spectators and even the other four competing team members were nearly blown away from the magic. Y/n quickly put up Cancri's iron shield to protect her, Noelle, and their crystal from the debris. The two of them were pretty much useless and inferior compared to Yuno and the Aqua Deer Captain. What was the point of them intervening?

"Amazing!" Rill cheered. "Amazing! Just amazing! This is incredible!" Quite possibly the largest smile ever spread across his face.

Yuno also found himself enjoying the thrill of the fight much more than he anticipated. A grin slowly etched his way on to his face without him realizing. It was exhilarating. He didn't know when was the last time he had so much fun fighting an opponent before. Or when was the last time he fought one so strong.

The exchange of magic continued, neither side wavering. Yuno was determined to win while Rill was hoping for the greatest masterpiece yet.

All of a sudden, a crystal shattered. "Huh?" Rill froze, glancing over his shoulder to see his broken crystal.
