"Yuno...don't leave me... I don't want to be abandoned again."

That's what Y/n told him once when they were kids.

It had been a bit rough at times, growing up without parents. Of course Father Ofai raised the children the best he could with the help of Sister Lily, but the one thing he couldn't always protect them from was the harsh bullying of those from the village.

Y/n had learned that the hard way.

Not everyone saw them as equals. It wasn't because of her age. Or the fact she was a female. Young girls were just as rude, catty, and condescending. No. It was all because she was considered poor.

Because of that fact it gave many the incentive that they were some how better than Y/n and her adopted family. Money, status and magic power were the things that defined oneself. It was the harsh truth of the biased world they lived in.

Y/n sat in the bathroom, with tears in her eyes, as Sister Lily treated to an injury on her knee. With Sister's water magic, it stopped bleeding, but her skin was still red and stung whenever Y/n moved her leg.

"Are you going to tell me how this happened, yet?" Sister Lily asked. Y/n sniffled, shaking her head no. The nun sighed. She still wasn't able to get any information from the child.
"Well, I did the best I could. Be careful from now on, m'kay?"

"Okay..." y/n said through her sniffles. She gave the nun a quick hug before scurrying out the bathroom. However, when she opened the door, a young black haired boy stumbled into the room after losing his balance.

"I-I umm," Yuno stammered. His cheeks warmed in embarrassment from being caught eavesdropping.

"Yuno," Sister Lily chided. "It's not polite to listen in on people's conversations."

"I know!" The boy exclaimed. He fiddled with his fingers nervously. "B-but Y/n was crying. I had to make sure she was ok."

His cheeks reddened even more. Y/n felt her own face heat up, bashful from Yuno's sweet concern. She hated to have worried everyone. It was particularly why she refused to tell them what happened so that it wouldn't turn into a bigger problem.

It wasn't worth it if Yuno was going to be sad because of her.

"Alright," Sister Lily sighed. "Next time, just knock and I'll let you in, m'kay? I know how much you care about everyone so I won't be mad."

Yuno quickly nodded, before rushing to Y/n's side. Y/n stifled a giggle as he searched her body for any more injuries.

"I'm ok, I promise," Y/n assured. She sniffled quietly, upset to have caused such a fuss. The small boy wiped a stray tear from her cheek, his amber eyes full of concern. She hadn't realized she was still crying.

"I don't like seeing you cry," Yuno said softly. He soothingly caressed her hair, picking out some leaves that had gotten tangled in from her earlier fall.

"Yuno," Y/n sniffled. Yuno carefully took her into his arms. "don't leave me... I don't want to be abandoned again."

She didn't want to be alone. Cause when she was alone, she was more vulnerable. More vulnerable to the hateful words. More vulnerable to the world. It scared her.

"Whenever you need me," he said, "I promise to be there. I'll always protect you."

Y/n tried to stop more tears from flowing, but thanks to his endearing words she couldn't help it. Cause at that moment, she realized, she wanted him to tell her that he'd be by her side no matter what, helping her face whatever bully came her way.
