4: new squad, new faces

Y/n panicked looking back and forth between Captain Fuegoleon and Captain Charlotte. She didn't know who to choose! Nor did she know much about either squad other than the fact that the Blue Rose contained mostly women.

"166, please make your decision."

"S-sorry!" Y/n apologized.

Both captains looked intimidating. Behind each one stood another person from the squad. Behind Fuegoleon stood a boy around Y/n's age who had the same fiery orange hair as the captain. He seemed rather unimpressed. Behind Charlotte stood a dark skinned female. Her expression was hard to read.

"Uh... I choose the Crimson Lions?"

Hoshi pulled her hair. "Say it like you mean it."

Nonetheless, Fuegoleon smiled down at her. Charlotte seemed disappointed but didn't show it very much. Y/n shakily made her way back to Asta and Yuno. Both gave her a reassuring smile.

They were now all Magic Knights.

The exams came to a close. Y/n was excited and extremely nervous. Excited to be a Magic Knight but nervous to be away from Asta and Yuno for the first time.

As Y/n waited for the two to return from the bathroom so they all could exchange their final goodbyes, a dark skinned girl with red dreadlocks scared the hell out of her by jumping on her back.

Instinctively, Y/n punched her in the face.

"Shit! You hit like a grown man," the girl laughed while rubbing her jaw. She had on black pants with a red halter shirt and bandages around her mid section. Hints of fishnet tights peeked from underneath her pant legs but stopped before reaching her black sandals.

"It's rude to jump on people you don't know," Hoshi scolded.

"Awe! You're so cute!" The girl gushed, poking Hoshi's cheek. "What are you? A fairy?"

"I'M A SYLPH DAMMIT!"

Y/n sighed and pushed Hoshi away. "I'm sorry, but who are you?"

"Oh right. My name's Nala Arenuma! I'm joining the Crimson Lions with you so I thought I'd introduce myself."

"I'm Y/n. That's Hoshi," Y/n said keeping her responses short. Nala grinned.

"Let's be good friends. We need to stick together. I hear there are hardly any females in the Crimson Lions."

"Y/n-" A familiar monotonous voice called. Yuno approached eyeing Nala cautiously. Nala merely flashed him a smile giving a friendly salute.

"Name's Nala. I'm Y/n's new teammate. You're the kid who got all the captains to raise their hands. You must be really powerful. We should spar some time. You'll probably kick my ass though cause my magic is definitely not that strong. Are you Y/n's boyfriend by the way? You're really cute."

Y/n slapped a hand over the chatterbox's mouth. Her cheeks tinted red in embarrassment. "S-Shut up!" Nala giggled and walked off to leave the two alone.

"I'm getting ready to go. I wanted to say goodbye," Yuno said. The tips of his ears turned red, but it went by unnoticed.

"I see..." Y/n said trying not to sound too sad. "Where's Asta?"

"His captain threw him through a portal."

Y/n sweatdropped. At least Asta is too stupid to get any more brain damage, she thought. "Well, take care of yourself Yuno. I'll miss you," the girl said feigning a smile.

Tears soon pooled in Y/n's eyes blurring her vision. Her chest felt tight and it became hard to swallow.

No she told herself. She wouldn't cry.

Yuno wiped away a stray tear that manage to escape and roll down Y/n's cheek. He pulled the h/c haired girl into a hug thus making her cry more.

"You act like we'll never see each other again," Yuno stated. "As knights, we'll often have to work together."

"B-but, why? Why couldn't I join your squad? We'd then see each other whenever we wanted. It's not fair."

"Y/n, you depend on me too much. I know we're close but you need to think for yourself for a change. You have strong magic with lots of potential. So become stronger." Yuno placed an endearing kiss on her forehead before walking off. "I can't have a weak Wizard Queen ruling by my side."

"That shit was so sweet I could taste it," Hoshi said with deadpan expression. "He is totally infatuated with you."

Y/n ignored the sylph and watched Yuno until he disappeared into the crowd. Her heart beat erratically and Nala didn't help the situation by giving her another fright.

"Y/n! Ack!" Y/n punched her in the face again. "Ow!"

"Stop scaring me dammit!" Y/n yelled.

"Sorry," Nala laughed. "You're an easy target. Anyway, the captain's here. Let's go."

Captain Fuegoleon was accompanied by the orange haired boy. Y/n and Nala were the only two new recruits. The first thing the captain did was give the two females a red Crimson Lions cloak.

Nala's eyes sparkled with excitement as she put hers on. Y/n felt the smooth material between her fingers before carefully putting it around her shoulders. They were now officially Magic Knights.

"Allow me to officially introduce myself. I'm Fuegoleon Vermillion. I will be your captain. You two have shown great potential and strength, and I only ask that you continue to hone your skills and bring honor to the Crimson Lions."

"We won't let you down, Captain Fuego," Nala said firmly.

"Hey, don't refer to my brother in such a casual manner," the boy snapped. "He deserves the-"

"Leo," Fuegoleon said warningly. Leo clicked his tongue and looked away annoyed. "This is my younger brother Leopold. Everyone get along. We are all comrades now."

"Yes sir," Nala said.

"Yeah yeah..." Leo muttered.

"Now, let's head back to the base," said the captain.

As they rode brooms to the Crimson Lions base, Nala and Leo raced each other making Fuegoleon sigh. Hoshi rested on Y/n's head, dozing off and enjoying the breeze. Y/n couldn't help but think of Yuno's words.

As much as it hurt, the stoic black haired male was correct. Everyone praised her for her strong magic. Y/n just let her anxiety and fear of failure keep her from utilizing it to its full potential. But now that Yuno wasn't there, she was forced to step out of her comfort zone.

I don't want to disappoint him, Y/n thought to herself. The wind whipped her hair almost sending Hoshi flying. The sylph squealed and hid in her shirt instead.

Failure is not an option! I will prove that I'm strong
because I'm a Magic Knight!

"Uwah! I just realized that Yuno kissed my forehead!" Y/n cried, face becoming flustered.

In her distracted state, she stopped applying magic to the broom. Her and Hoshi began to fall from the sky.

"You stupid woman!" Hoshi yelled. He yanked at Y/n's hands trying to pull them away from her flustered
face. "Focus so we don't pummel to our deaths!"
