28: royal knight exams

The day had finally come for the Royal Knight entrance exams. After word quickly spread about the discovery of the Eye of the Midnight Sun's base, knights from each squad were eager to try out.

Y/n found herself lost amongst the crowd as they all gathered in the colosseum. She originally had been grouped with her squad, staying close to Nala for support, but then the redhead got into a heated argument with her older brother. Which left the poor h/c-ette stranded with strangers.

"I wanna go home..." Y/n sulked, facing the wall. Hoshi sighed.

"Stop being a baby. Have some dignity-hey!" The sound of the male sylph's shout caught his partner's attention.

"Oh wow. The wings are so smooth!" A young boy around her age held Hoshi like he were a doll. He had an afro of burgundy curls and dark red eyes. Little freckles dotted his almond colored nose. The Aqua Deer squad robe hung around his shoulder. "Where did you buy this from? It's soo cool!"

"BUY?!" Hoshi shrieked. "I'm not no damn toy!"

"He's a part of my magic," Y/n sweatdropped. "I advise you let him go, cause he will bite."

"Oh! My bad!" The boy chuckled, letting the very angry sylph go. Hoshi blew a raspberry at him before darting in the comfort of Y/n's breast pocket.

"Sorry, he's a bit of a brat," Y/n apologized.

"I should be sorry. No one likes to be manhandled like that. I'm Nico by the way," Nico said with a bright smile. It liked identical to someone Y/n knew.

"Hey, do you happen to be-"

"What the hell you say, jackass!"

"You heard what I said! I said there's no way your stupid ass will pass the exam."

"If it's based on intelligence, then neither will you!"

The crowd could only stare in bewilderment as the two Arenumas bickered with each other over who knows what. Nico sighed, covering his face in embarrassment.

"Nee-chan, Nii-chan..."

"You're Nala's younger brother?" Y/n put two and two together. She had met all of the Arenuma brothers except for Nico up to this point. The burgundy hair should've been a dead give away.

"Sadly," Nico sighed.

"Bitch!"

"Asswipe!"

"I'm going to go stop them," the younger Arenuma said. "It was nice meeting you and best of luck during the exams." Nico then quickly ran off, trying to hold back Nala from pounding Nox's face in.

"That whole family has issues," Hoshi muttered.

"They're entertaining." Y/n looked around the different magic knights. Everyone looked like strong, formidable foes. There were Nebra and Solid Silva. Members from the Golden Dawn, including the Vice Captain, Langris. And some of the Black Bulls. Whatever was in store wouldn't be easy with the other competitors.

"Oi! Y/n-chan! I was looking for you," Asta's cheery voice automatically caught her attention. The hyperactive boy was followed by her stoic boyfriend. "Wasn't that hot spring great the other day?"

"Yes. It really relaxed my nerves for today," Y/n answered with a soft smile.

"Bullshit," Hoshi coughed. The h/c-ette punched her chest, over the pocket he was hiding in, making him shout in pain.

"Are you both ready for today?"

"YEP! I may have lost in the volcano climbing match, but I won't lose to either of you today," Asta declared.

"Have you practiced how to act when you lose? So you don't end up bawling?" Yuno taunted. Y/n elbowed him in the side, mouthing "be nice." However, Asta didn't take it as an insult.

"You sure look like you're having fun, Yuno."

"You too Asta." The two rivals smiled. It made Y/n to see how after all this time, the two still took their competition and drive to be the Wizard King serious. They never had any hate for each other. They each worked equally hard and would do their best to one up on another. While Y/n sometimes found it comical, like two children trying to beat each other in a game, she admired and respected their determination.

"I'm going to do my best too," Y/n declared. "And don't get mad if I leave you two behind in the process."

Before the two could respond, the Wizard King appeared, welcoming everyone to the exams. She gave the two a confident smile and a thumbs up. She wouldn't be left behind. Asta and Yuno had made such progress and she couldn't be caught slacking. But to say that the concept of the exam surprised her was an understatement.

"This exam consists of a team based crystal destruction battle tournament," the king shouted.

"eh? We're not just gonna beat the crap out of each other?" Asta questioned.

An image of a large blue crystal appeared behind the king. It wasn't a small object like Y/n thought but rather a massive thing that was probably her height.

"You will have to destroy this crystal. The rules are simple. Protect the crystal in your area and destroy the crystal of the other team to win. If the time limit of 30 minutes passes before either crystal is destroyed, the team who has dealt the most damage wins. The reason we chose this method is to...uh..." The king trailed off, as if he couldn't remember the script he probably memorized ten minutes before.

Julius cleared his throat before picking up where the king left. "We will need many magic knights to cooperate during the battle against the Eye of the Midnight sun. But cooperation and pure power won't be enough when that battle comes. We thought that this type of exam would best showcase your strategic thinking."

"This kind of seems like a game," Y/n thought out loud.

"I shall now announce the teams."

A bright light turned into a display which showed several rows of teams consisting of three members each. Y/n searched for hers, hoping maybe one of her teammates was someone she knew.

"Are you kidding me!" Nala's shout resonated throughout the colosseum. "I can't believe I'm with you dumbasses.

"I don't even want to do this anymore," Nox complained. "It's no fun if I cant hit you." Low and behold, all three Arenuma siblings were on the same team. The odd of that happening seemed unlikely.

"Come on you guys," Nico tried to calm his siblings down. "Not only do we have to do well for our respective squads, but for the Arenuma family name too."

"Shut up! No one asked you!" Nala hissed

"Hey! No need to be a bitch!" Nox snapped. Nico could only sigh.

Asta was paired with Mimosa and some asshole from the Purple Orcas named Xerx Lugner. Yuno was shockingly paired with Noelle and-

"Y/n, we're on the same team," Yuno said, making her jump. True to his word, the three of their names were paired together. Though he didn't show it, Yuno was thrilled to have Y/n on his team. Of course he wanted her to shine on her own, but by being on the same team, they could pair their magic together like they used to as kids. Plus, he wanted to be able to look after her. With all the nobles, he didn't trust them to play fair. And while he didn't know much about Noelle's magic, if she was in Asta's squad, she had to be strong in her own way.

"Let's do our best," Y/n said. She then smiled at Noelle. "You too Noelle-san."

"Y-yeah..." the silver haired girl said absentmindedly, staring at her brother. Y/n elbowed her softly.

"Don't worry," the h/c-ette assured. "Let's work together and pass this exam."
