Chapter Thirty-Five - Talk To Me
J A D E
". . .all of you are going to---"
Suddenly the dismissal bell rang and everyone in the classroom rose up from our seats with cheers, as well as the other sections.
Our teacher closed her eyes in annoyance, waiting for the bell's ringing to end. As soon as it stopped, she smiled and said the words that brought groans all over the room. "-make an essay about atoms and the history of how the Periodic Table was made. Due on Wednesday, and you know the usual, pass it to the Science beadle before 7:30. Late papers won't be accepted. Goodbye, class."
Not even half of the class said goodbye to her and we all stood up from our seats, heading outside the classroom. I dropped by my locker and placed a few of my things in it, heading to one of the school's lawns afterwards.
I sat on an empty bench and attempted to release all of my frustration today with a sigh. As minutes passed, I began to grow more bored than ever. I don't even know why the hell I went here.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and opened my messages. The latest conversation found on top was mine and JK's and I found mine and Darren's below it. Hesitating for a while, I clicked it and read all the messages I sent him few days ago that weren't replied.
I sighed silently. If I call him again right now, I would probably get the same response: a voicemail.
Without really thinking about it, I texted him.
'Hi' -J
I pressed the power button and waited for a reply that probably wouldn't happen. But then suddenly, a few minutes later, my phone vibrated. My heart almost leaped out of my chest in surprise. I unlocked it, and a message popped out on the screen.
It was from Darren.
'Hey'
I reread the three-letter message four hundred and fifty-two times. Am I seeing properly? Did Darren just message me? After all this time, why did he choose to reply now? What even made him reply?
My heart was pumping so fast and even my hands were shaky. I wiped the sweat that formed on my palms on my skirt and typed a message, but ended up erasing it because I think it's lame. I typed another one, but ended up doing the same.
Darren just replied. He. Just. Replied.
After typing and erasing in what seemed like forever I finally settled on a simple text.
'Where are you?' -J
Okay now I'm starting to regret sending him that message, without an apparent reason. I'm starting to worry if he thinks that I'm using that demanding tone on that message when I'm not. If he did, there's a great chance that he'll get pissed and choose not to reply me ever again. Oh god.
Few minutes passed, and I'm really starting to think that he really got pissed. But then suddenly a text message arrived and that almost got my phone flying out of my hands.
I took a deep breath before reading the message, preparing myself for whatever might happen to me because of his text. God, Jade, you don't even know if this was his!
