While sitting I stared blankly at the wall. I heard the bell ring. I wasn't startled or anything... Just numb. 'Kagami. I-I thought y-you were different. I th-thought I c-could trust you.' My mind raced with thoughts. Tears slowly drained out of my face as students were walking in the class. More stares, as to be expected since a girl was crying in a corner. I didn't even care any more. I decided at that moment that life itself hated me.
*Flashback* to 9 year old Nova
"Lizzy, Lizzy! Pass the ball!"
"Sure!"
I ran across the basketball court. Wind blowing threw my hair as I sprinted around. Lizzy and I were hanging out again in the hot summer sun. That's what friends are for right?
I jumped as high as I could and threw the basketball in the hoop, scoring a three pointer.
"Nova you're amazing!" Lizzy said patting my back.
"You think so!?" My eyes sparkled in happiness. Lizzy, my mentor, my friend, my 20 year old sister, said I was good at basketball. Lizzy was my one and only sister, we weren't related by blood but she was just as close as family. Not only was she my sister but a legendary basketball player. She got a full paid college scholarship and once she graduated she'd play in the professional league. Yeah, she's THAT good.
And here I was getting told that I'm a good basketball player.
We continued playing and having fun until it got dark. I was tired so we sat down on a bench. I snuggled up in Lizzy's lap and rested my head on her shoulder. I held the basketball she gave me tightly in my arms.
"Lizzy?" "Yeah Nova." "Will I be as good of a basketball player as you when I grow up?"
"I don't know Nova. You're great at basketball but you've got a lot of growing to do. Maybe one day you'll find something you care about more than basketball... Someone."
She hummed a soothing song and I drifted off to sleep. Lizzy carried me to my house and gave me back to my mom. As I dreamt I thought about if there was anything I cared about more than basketball. 'Maybe one day I'll find what Lizzy is talking about' I thought as I was still holding the basketball.
"Thank you for playing with her today Lizzy." My mom said "No problem! Anytime you need me I'll be here." "Ok be safe now walking home." "Yeah I will."
My arms relaxed and the basketball rolled out. It kept going until it started picking up speed and went into the street.
"Oh I'll get it!" Lizzy said. My eyes creaked open since the ball had gone missing from my arms. I saw Lizzy in the street picking it up when...
*BAM!*
A car came out of no were hitting Lizzy.
Just like that she was gone. Lizzy, my mentor, my friend, my sister, gone before my very eyes. The only person I truly cared for was killed because of me. I held the basketball. I let it go. And I was asleep so she had to go get it. No matter how you look at it, it was me.
"LIZZY!!!" I screamed, tears rolled down my face and I sobbed in terror. Lizzy was gone. Just like that.
After that moment I hated basketball. Any sport with a ball and a competitive nature was shut out. I refused to open up to sports ever again, in fear of what might happen if I did.*back to present day*
"Nova?... Nova?... NOVA!" I heard a scream as someone was poking my arm. It was Ms.Carter. "You ok? You started to cry more and said 'Lizzy... I'm sorry.'" I looked her in the eyes. My eyes were blood shot from me crying and red streaks ran down my face from the tears. "Ms.Carter? Can I go home?" I looked at her with a sincere 'I can't do this anymore' expression. *sigh* "I'll call home." "There's no one there. My Uncle and Aunt left yesterday. They own the house but they aren't coming back to it..." My Uncle and Aunt had moved out of the house. They said they will pay for it and take care of me money wise, but with their business travels and work they couldn't keep stopping to take care of me.
Again, I was all alone.
"Honey..." Ms.Carter had nothing to say. I don't blame her. How do you tell a girl like me everything will be alright when the world had turned it's back on her?
