Esma remained perched on the roof beam, her watchful eyes staring out into the grey sky. Gwaihir and Nova were pressed against her sides, snuggling into her warm feathers. Swift had flown out to stretch his wings, then he and Esma would swap.
She turned her head slightly, her eyes finding the empty corner that had once held her nest. It was not possible for her to sleep there anymore. Not since Byron...
Esma closed her eyes briefly, then turned to look forward again. Nova chirped quietly in her sleep and her mother lovingly covered both of the blackbirds with her wings.
Raising her eyes again to the sky, Esma got lost in her thoughts.
The dragons were getting restless. It was late March and the Order had been planning for weeks how to go about with the attack. But they would move soon. Esma was sure of it.
Aries had brought the needed snake scales and since Professor Flitwick had managed to collect something from Big Blue, the potion was as good as finished. The only thing missing was...something of Fawkes.
But if they were successful in freeing Mioha, they wouldn't need it.
Esma sighed worriedly.
Things we so over the place right now. She couldn't know for certain whether Mioha was alright or not. Esma didn't even know if-
She swallowed. If she would ever have the chance to apologize to Mioha.
Something fluttered across the sky, a dark speck getting closer fast. Esma narrowed her eyes in alarm. It was not an owl, the shape was too big-
"Is that Tellahorn?", muttered Nova sleepily and blinked.
A moment later, the Great Eagle almost crashed into the owlery, breaking his fall by slamming into the wall. Esma fluttered up in alarm.
"Tellahorn?", she exclaimed and flew over to the eagle that was sprawled out over the floor. She landed by his head and stuck out her talon to push up his eyelid.
He looked at her drowsily.
"Hey, big guy", said Esma sharply and shook his eyelid. "Wake up. What's the matter?"
"They're moving now!", the eagle groaned and turned his massive head. "The humans and the dragons, their going to rescue your friend!"
Esma froze in shock and let go of his eyelid. It snapped back shut and Tellahorn winced.
She whirled around to Nova and Gwaihir and swung herself into the air. "Wait for your father", she said sharply. "Do not follow me."
"Mum-", Gwaihir protested.
"No!" Esma shot out of the owlery and headed for the gates of Hogwarts. She saw some Order members gathered around the golden gates, only twenty people. The four massive dragons waited a few meters away, impatiently digging up the ground.
