'Adena, Adena...'

Regulus' voice was speaking clearly as if he was just next to her. The girl only had to open her eyes to realize it was all in her head. No voice was heard anymore. She was out of breath, and even sweating maybe. She couldn't help but place a hand on her chest where she felt Regulus' pendant that she clutched in her hand. And she felt incredibly cold. The strong and comforting arms that were holding her some hours ago had disappeared. She was all alone. For some seconds she panicked. Where is Regulus? What happened to him? The girl straightened up, unconsciously her frantic eyes looked all around the room. The first thing she noticed was the darkness of the bedroom, making her guess it must have been as dark outside. But there was enough light coming from the morning sky, where the sun was barely out, for her to notice something else. First, was the green and silver scarf belonging to her boyfriend lying on the bed beside her. The next things she noticed were placed on her bedside table. Objects that weren't there before. Adena got closer to them, first recognizing the pendant with the black gem she had gifted her boyfriend two years ago, then was a jewel. A ring she had never seen before. But what attracted her the most was the piece of parchment lying underneath. Her trembling hand reached out to take it so she could read the words addressed to her.

'Dearest Adena,

When you read this letter, I probably will not be part of this world anymore. But I want you to know that it is for the world's well-being hopefully. Indeed, thanks to this brave Kreacher, I managed to find a thing that could help bring the Dark Lord to his fall. Unfortunately, it is not without consequences, and I had to give my life for this.

Adena, I am terribly sorry I must leave you alone, but I did what was the best thing to do. Do not forget me, I plead, but be happy, and above all, never forget how much I have loved you all these months, all these years. You cannot know how much you have meant to me. But let me thank you one last time.

I did not get enough time to be able to call you my wife, but I will continue to love you through death.

Follow your dreams, be who you have ever wanted to be, and most importantly, take care of you.

My heart is forever yours and my soul is always with you.

I love you and for eternity,

                                                                                                                                  Regulus'

As Adena finished reading, tears were streaming down her face, blurring her vision. She wanted to scream, but it was like she had become mute. No sound could go out, tears and only tears. A void filled her, a hole in her chest she knew would never be filled. Regulus was gone, and her heart was gone with him. She still couldn't believe it. They were still together hours ago. And now Regulus was gone, Regulus who would never ever be with her again, it was unimaginable. It was as if she expected him to be back, to hug her in his gentle arms like he always would do. But a part of her knew it would never happen. He was forever gone but she couldn't help staying attached to these delusional thoughts. Her mind was screaming 'Come back! I need you!' But she was still feeling a void inside her. Adena clutched to the Slytherin scarf belonging to Regulus, bringing her face closer to the fabric, smelling his scent, and letting out more tears, expressing herself in the only way she was able to.

During the day, her mother, probably worried about not seeing her daughter the whole day decided to visit her.

"Adena. It's me," she said softly as she knocked, before she entered the room.

The girl stayed quiet and waited for her mother to sit by her side.

"Regulus is dead," mumbled Adena, nuzzling her face in the scarf, her body curling up in a ball.

The mother remained quiet as she watched her daughter and her visible pain, her hand going over to caress her arm in a comforting manner.

"I'm sorry Darling," she said after some time. "Regulus came to me not long ago. He told me about him and apologized in advance for leaving you. He was troubled but looked determined. He requested me to look after you because from his words, I am the person who loves you the most after him."

Adena had a hard time believing these words. She stayed immobile, thinking about the words her mother had just told her.

"He was really a good boy, you were right. No matter what he was, he loved you dearly and I'm glad you met such a kind person who loved you so much."

"I love him too, Mum," mumbled the girl through the flow of tears that was streaming down her face.

"I know I know," she whispered, giving her comforting caresses.

Her mother was being so nice to her. She must have hated that sight and she was trying her best to comfort Adena, but the girl wasn't even realizing it. All she could think of was Regulus and that nothing could comfort her or heal her the way he used to. She was wrapping her arms around her own body, wishing she could be enveloped in her boyfriend's arms instead. It hasn't been a full day yet, but it was already unbearable. She wanted her lover back, she would do anything to see him again, to kiss him again. She regretted not telling him how much she loved him more or how much he was making her happy. But most importantly, the girl regretted not telling him to run away together before, when he felt still free of any responsibility. And even after knowing the reason of his departure, she couldn't help being selfish and wishing he hadn't done any of this even if it was for the world's well-being. She couldn't care less about the world's well-being if her own happiness wasn't fulfilled. The girl instantly felt guilty for thinking this way and instead started thinking she should have gone with him, so she would have saved him or on the contrary they would have left together. This image of them together leaving this world, holding onto each other as life left their body was almost comforting. They started existing together and they would have stopped breathing together. But instead, life was continuing for her. The fire he had created was slowly being turned off and at some point she would probably not be able feel anything at all.

author's note: hi so this is the last chapter of lost in the stars oh my god. can't believe it's real. thank you to everyone who has stuck with this story all this time. it's been almost 3 years since i first published it, so much has changed since then it's crazy. i'm forever grateful for the 86k reads holy fuck! and all the comments, which i've loved reading. this was my first experience of writing back in 2021, when i was in my first year of college, during lockdown, after loving so much the writing exercises my teacher gave us. 4 years later i'm about to finish my 5th year of college and also turning 23 in a few days, crazy how life works and i've been writing all this time. writing has brought me so much, such as improvements in English and in my writing, in ways of expressing myself and of viewing life as well i guess. it was so fun and i hope to continue for a long time.

i hope you liked this story as much as i did, and the hp characters that were in this story, who i hopefully wrote well, and also the characters i create, because i love adena, and candace, and jacob, and jade, and isaac, and noah, and millie and eugenia. they've been fun to create and write and i hope they brought a lot to this story.

well again thank you for those who interacted with this story, it brought me so much joy
