The Devils of Jujutsu

Chapter 8: First Mission

(Asta's p.o.v.)

Liebe and I have been at the jujutsu academy for a full year now, and while our training to be jujutsu sorcerers is a long way from complete, we were given our first mission so we can get actual combat experience in fighting curse spirits. Gojou came up to us and explained our assignment, "Ok boys, now here's what your first mission will be. In the northwest region of Diamond Kingdom, there's a reportedly haunted house that people been suddenly turning up dead by mysterious means. The bodies were found with their insides burnt to a crisp, this is likely the handiwork of a curse spirit and there could be more. So, your job is to go Diamond and exorcise all the curse spirits inside the  house, there will be a supervisor with you." Jujutsu sorcerers and students aren't allowed to go on solo missions unless they're Grade 2 or higher and sorcerers are usually assigned to curse spirits of equal rank. So, until we become 2nd Grade, we'll need to have a supervisor with us on missions.

Suddenly, we heard a knock on the door and Gojou told them to come in. It was a blonde-haired man wearing sunglasses and a black uniform with the jujutsu sorcerers crest on the buttons. Gojou said, "Guys, this will be your supervisor for this mission, Kento Nanami, he's a 1st Grade sorcerer, so count on him if anything goes wrong." Honestly, I was surprised that our supervisor would be such a powerful sorcerer. Nanami greeted us, and we did the same. Nanami told us to get ready to head out tomorrow, and be sure to wear our uniforms. When Liebe and I first arrived at the academy, they said they planned to make uniforms for us for when we're on the job. While they were at it, I asked them to remove the black bulls insignia from my headband and replace it with the sorcerer's crest, there's was no point in keeping the bull's insignia after all. Me and Liebe were told that the uniforms would serve as a warning for any curse users(evil jujutsu sorcerers) that would happen to spot us, making them think twice before attacking.

Tomorrow, came and me and my brother, equipped with our cursed tools were ready to head to Diamond Kingdom on our first mission. It took us a week to get to the haunted house, it was a rather big house, about 2 stories high. When we got there, Nanami said, "Alright, before we head inside, we should put up a veil to keep outsider from seeing us use our techniques." About 3 months prior, we were taught how to put up a commonly used barrier called a veil, it conceals sorcerers from the outside, and makes curse spirits appear and become visible, even to non sorcerers. Nanami turned to me and said, "Asta, let's see you put up the veil." I nodded. I made a sign with my right hand and spoke the chant:

"Emerge from darkness, blacker still. Purify that which is impure."

With that, a huge dark mass that formed in the sky, began to spread out and come down, enveloping the perimeter of the property, it looked like day just suddenly turned into night. Nanami said, "Very good Asta, now we can get down to business." Liebe and I nodded and followed him into the house. Soon after coming inside, we were greeted by three white, humanoid figures with one big eye in each of their foreheads, that I could only assume were curse spirits, Nanami said that we each take on one of the curses, we separated and engaged the enemy. Nanami took his down in one swift movement, I mean so fast I couldn't see it. Then, it was my turn. My opponent came charging at me and tried to take a swipe at me, I dodged and sliced the curse's head off with my katana, it was probably a Grade 4, because it was too weak. Then, I look toward Liebe's fight.

Asta and Nanami have both exorcised their foes, now for me to rap things up with my opponent. And like, the first two curses, my enemy was quickly dispatched. When all of them died their bodies disappeared.Nanami then told us, "These were just 4th Grade curse spirits, easy for students like you boys to defeat. And I'm sure you noticed that there's an even stronger curse here." He was right, I did sense it myself, there was a stronger presence coming from above us. Asta sensed it as well, but when we were about to head upstairs, the curse phased through the ceiling and landed 10 feet away from us. The curse spirit resembled a cross between a human and a lion. Nanami informed us, "Listen you two, that is a 2nd Grade curse spirit. Neither of you are ready to face it yet, so stand back, I'll take care of it." We stepped back like he told us to and watched him fight the curse. Nanami reached inside his uniform and pulled out a small cleaver-like weapon with a wrapped blade, which made me and Asta curious how would he be able to hurt the curse spirit with a blunt blade.

The fight began with the curse trying to strike Nanami with it's right-hand, but he dodged it and somehow managed to slice off it's hand with his wrapped up blade. That surprised me and Asta, we couldn't believe or understand how Nanami did that. After he severed the curse's arm, Nanami spun around and sliced just below the nape of it's neck, killing it instantly and it's body vanished. Nanami put his weapon away, and we asked, "Nanami, how did you do that even though you used a blunt blade?" Nanami replied, "Good question. It's because of my cursed technique. It's known as the Ratio technique." He went to explain it, "My technique divides a with ten lines and forcibly creates a weak spot at the ratio point of 7:3, and when I strike it, even with a blunt blade, I can deal considerable damage." Asta replied, "So, no matter how tough their defenses are, hitting any part of the opponent will cause damage?" "Correct. Now let's do a final sweep of the house, and exorcise any other curse spirits we came across." We nodded to Nanami's statement, and continued to search for and exorcise any remaining curse spirits in the house, in total there were 12 curses in the house that we exorcised. After that, we all went outside, Asta took down his veil, and we all went back to the academy.
