Chapter 15 ~ Oaken Cottage

Several hours had elapsed since Legolas and Faeriel's most illuminating sunrise. After reluctantly departing the airy canopy, the two elves and their furred companion had traveled all day, pausing only for a midday meal. Rusco had abandoned his chariot and bounded alongside, energized as he was by the nut muffins of the day before. Night had since fallen, and Rusco had eaten again, then retired to Faeriel's hip pouch to sleep.

The almost full moon cast narrow slivers of white light along their path. Faeriel's nerves had markedly calmed. She had been fearful she would witness more of the blight, the pollution which had made her feel so sick and powerless during the Orc attack. But their way thus far proved almost as healthy as the woods under Rada's protection.

Faeriel knew that more healthy Forest existed, such as the groves surrounding the elven stronghold. She had been heartbroken when Rada had revealed to her a few years prior that more than three quarters of the Woodland Realm was under siege by evil.

It was difficult for her to fathom such evil and to believe that the blight and the orcs of the previous day had not been but a terrible nightmare. Yet the brutal memory haunted her thoughts, making her grievously aware that it had been all too real.

Fewer Ardalings had dwelt in the first several hours beyond Rada's sanctuary, but as the two elves and Faeriel's sleeping passenger forged further into the Woodland Realm, Faeriel began to discern more of them, fast asleep in their burrows and nests. It was a wonder to her, for she had believed all Ardalings had fled to Rada's sanctuary.
