The sound of an alarm woke me up from my sleep. I let out a sigh and got up to find my robe. This had been the fourth time that the rebels had gotten into the palace in the last two weeks.

All that silence for practically months and now these thugs decide they wanted to break into the palace? I couldn't help but wonder what was the change.

Once I put my robe on, I left my room and went to the nearest passageway. It honestly surprised me how calm I was but at this point, I knew what to do and should I encounter a rebel, I knew I'd be able to handle myself. The memory of defending Maxon that one night came back to me.

I went down the spiral staircase to find the entrance to the royal safe room. I saw Maxon pacing near the entrance. As soon as I was a few yards away his head snapped up and we made eye contact. A smile made its way across his face and I couldn't help but smile too. I quickly walked into the safe room, ready to hug my mate but I realized that we weren't alone. The other Selected were there and so were the king and queen so all I could do was walk past him and sit down on a cot.

The sound of the metal door closing made me look up. At this point I was fine with being locked in but it still set me on edge.

Maxon made his rounds with the other girls, checking up on them before making his way to me. He sat down beside me but we were silent.

This sudden increase in attacks made me wonder if Kriss's superiors had sent a replacement for her and that was why all these attacks were happening now. It made me feel so guilty. All this time had passed since Kriss's departure and I still hadn't found the time to tell Maxon to watch out for any new staff coming to the palace.

"There's something I should've told you after Kriss left." He looked over at me and then back at the ground. "What's wrong?"

"The day Kriss left, I overheard her talking on the phone with someone, her boss I think. They were arguing about how she wasn't allowed to leave because they needed her here. What I'm trying to say is that Kriss is a Northern Rebel and they needed her here because she was letting them into the palace."

He didn't say anything back and that made me nervous. "I'm so sorry Maxon, I should've said something the moment I found out and now I suspect that the reason these attacks have been happening so often is because they finally managed to get Kriss's replacement into the palace."

"You should have told me America, it's been weeks since I sent her home!"

"I know I know, I just couldn't find the right time to tell you. Not to mention you were always busy working," I said, trying to defend myself. I knew I was in the wrong, I just hated that Maxon was upset with me. "You could have said anything at any time. You can literally talk to me whenever you want. You're inside my head."

I looked down at my lap, not sure what else I could say to appease him. "I'm sorry." I heard him take a deep breath in and then out. "It's okay America. You should have told me sooner but what's done is done. Besides, even if you had told me sooner and we did manage to catch whoever they were sending, they would've continued trying to send someone until they got into the palace."
