My stomach grumbles loud enough for Sarah and Kiara to hear. Mrs. Carrera is making dinner, so that problem should be solved in no time. I continue flipping through one of the old comic books in Kie's room, ignoring the sound as if I hadn't even heard it.
Sarah hums. "That smells delicious. What's your mom making?" Kiara sniffs the air.
"Smells like fresh green beans," she starts before sniffing again. "Maybe some mashed potatoes and chicken."
That sounds so good. All I can think about right now is food. I shift a little in Kiara's bean bag chair. "Girls, dinner's ready," Mrs. Carrera shouts up the stairs. The three of us hop out of our seats and hurry down the stairs. In the kitchen, Kie's mom carries clear dishes to the table, where her dad is seated.
"Set the table, please," Mrs. Carrera asks kindly, so we begin to grab plates and silverware out of the cabinets and drawers. Kiara reaches for glasses and fills them with filtered water. What I'd do to be a Kook.
Once the table is set, the five of us sit in front of bowls and trays filled with exactly the food Kie pointed out upstairs. Kie starts passing dishes around the table for us to fill up our plates. I stock my plate with food, patiently waiting for the fun conversation to start.
"So, Brie, how do you like working at the Wreck so far," Mr. Carrera asks me. I finish chewing on the food in my mouth, then swallow. "I love it there," I exclaim. "The people are so nice, and the job is just so fun."
"I'm glad," he laughs.
"Thank you so much for giving me the job," I say with a genuine smile. Mr. Carrera swallows his food and sips on some water. "It's my pleasure. I could tell you'd be a hardworking and trusted employee."
I blush. No one's ever said that about me. No one's parent has ever liked me enough to give me a job. Hell, no one's parent has ever liked me enough to have me at their house twice. "So, are you liking the Outer Banks so far," Mrs. Carrera asks between chews.
"Oh, yes," I nod. "I love it here."
"You're not helping Kie and those boys with them treasure hunts, are you," she jokes. I shake my head sarcastically. Kie and Sarah follow my lead.
"No."
"Definitely not."
"No way."
Mrs. Carrera gives us all an 'I know you're lying, but okay' look. We all giggle and finish our food.
