My stomach aches for some food

My stomach aches for some food. JJ and I have been in jail for two days, and it's the worst. It only sucks because it's not even peace and quiet like I thought. The cops come up and bother the crap out of us. JJ and I are cell mates, thank God. I'm laying on his lap while we wait for food. "Hey, J," I whisper. He looks down at his hands playing with my hair. "Hm?"

"Do you think they've noticed we're gone yet," I ask. He nods, pursing his lips together. "Yeah, they'll probably be by at some point today." I sigh. I've been trying to hold in my vomit for the past twenty minutes. I don't know if I'm sick or it's the jail food or what, but I feel disgusting. Suddenly, some rattling makes me jump up from JJ. Shoupe is unlocking the barred door. "Whatcha doin', Shoupe," I ask the man.

"You two are some lucky sons of bitches," Shoupe scoffs. "Your little friends bailed you out." He opens the door, allowing us to leave. "You're both free to go." I glance at JJ, who smirks and reaches for my hand. Together, we run outside to the van, where the Pogues are waiting. "Took you long enough," I complain.

"What the hell is wrong with you two," Pope shouts. I stop in my tracks. Who does he think he's talking to? "We could've saved so much more time without having to bail you both out of jail," Kie rolls her eyes. This is getting annoying. I look at John B for help. He raises his hands in defense. "Don't look at me. You're the ones who got arrested."

My last chance is Sarah. She shrugs, "I don't know how to help you, B. I'm sorry." My face turns red with anger. I can't hold it back anymore. "You know what," I shout. "If it weren't for you assholes being ignorant, we wouldn't have gotten arrested. Forget it, I'm walking home." I toss my hand over my shoulder, throwing the group the finger, as I start walking in the other direction.

"You guys really are assholes," JJ says behind me. "We got arrested because of Topper. And you jerks were no help. So thanks for that." Then, JJ catches up with me, and we walk home together. We both get so angry, we won't speak, so the walk home was quiet.

By the time we get home, I'm so sick to my stomach, I have to book it to make it to the bathroom in time. Sarah must have heard me puking, so she knocks on the door. "Occupado," I shout between the spits of vomit. The handle turns, and I'm about to go off until I see Sarah. She smiles gently at me, and holds my hair back.

"I'm sorry about earlier," she says softly. "I wish I could've been there for you. I was a jerk." I laugh a little. "I love you so much, Brie, and I don't like seeing you hurt or angry. Just know I am always here for you. You're my best friend, and that won't ever go away."

Once I'm finished throwing up, I brush my teeth and follow Sarah into the living room, where everyone else watches me. "Brie, I'm so sorry," Kie says.

"Me too," Pope agrees. John B nods his head. "We were jerks."

"It's fine you guys," I tell them. "But right now, we have work to do."

"I did not wanna come back here," Kie complains, hopping out of the car. JJ shakes his head as he jumps out, resting an arm around me. The six of us walk to the gate, then send warnful gazes to each other. "Are we sure this place is empty," Pope asks.

"Yeah, I saw the listing on my dad's desk," Sarah reassured him. "Apparently, Mrs. Craine checked herself into a nursing home after we snuck onto her property."

"Yeah," JJ scoffed. "Probably because you and Kie woke the killer!" I can't help but giggle at JJ's comment, which received some looks from Kie and Sarah. "Sorry," I whisper, looking at my shoes.

"Okay." John B claps his hands together. "Ladies first."

"Okay," JJ grunts, squatting down a bit. I hold onto his shoulders gently, stepping into his hands. He lifts me carefully up onto the fence. John B lifts Sarah, who hops right over the fence with me. "A little help," Pope groans. John B and JJ rush to help him get Kie over the fence.

When she lands with a small thump on the grass, the boys begin to climb the fence. John B and JJ jump down, but Pope gets caught at the top. "Why does this always happen," he asks. Kie laughs a little. "Of course you got stuck."

Pope struggles for a bit while John B says, "C'mon, man." Finally, he falls to the ground. JJ chuckles and I snort at how stupid the boy looks. "Thanks, you guys, for the help," Pope says, getting up off the ground.

"Let's go, Humpty Dumpty," I laugh, helping him up. Then, I follow the Pogues to a small opening at the bottom of the house. John B and Sarah crawl in first, then Kiara and JJ. I mimick their steps, followed by Pope. JJ holds my hand, leading me to a giant hole in the ground.

"The well," I whisper. I pick up a pebble and drop it into the hole. A few seconds later, a plop of water sounds. "Alright, who had the rope," John B asks. JJ pulls the long rope off his shoulder and hands it to my brother. John B secures it around his waist, handing the other end to us.

Kie and I tie the other end around a pole, then nod at the boys. John B stands on the ledge and salutes us. We begin to drop him, grasping firmly to the rope. "Do you really think the number will be down there," Kie asks. "Don't you think we would've found it sooner?"

"Not if you were looking for something else," I smirk. We continue to drop my brother until he shouts, "Wait!" The five of us share glances, wondering if he found something.

"This is the hole that the gold was in," John B tells us from inside the well. After a few moments, he says, "I found it! Guys, I found it! Pull me up!" Excited, we hurry to pull the boy up to the surface. He grasps his hands around the top of the well. As he hoists himself up, I rush to his side. Kie and I help him to his feet.

"So, what number was it," Pope asks John B hurriedly. John B looks amongst us, then says, "It was a one."

We all whoop and holler, hugging each other excitedly. We practically skip out of the house. We're almost at the gate when I stop, accidentally yanking JJ by his hand. He looks at me in confusion. "You okay, Brie?"

I cover my mouth with my hand. I suddenly feel sick to my stomach. I quickly let go of JJ's hand, rushing to the trees. I begin throwing up my food from jail. "Woah, Brie," JJ exclaims.

"Ew," Kie grunts. "Oh, my gosh, are you okay?" Kie and Sarah run to me. They hold my hair back until I wipe my mouth clean. "You good, dude," Sarah asks.

"Yeah," I chuckle. " It was probably just the jail food."

"Okay," Kie breathes. "Let's get out of here." We race to the fence. JJ holds out his hands, and I jump to the top of the fence. Sarah and I plop to the ground, but Pope has trouble again. "Oh my gosh, Pope," John B grunts.

The boys help Pope get Kie over the fence, then hop over behind us. We walk to the van and get in. "Whoo, baby," JJ screams. "We got the digit!"

"Yeah," Kie shouts. The rest of us scream in excitement. John B starts the car, quickly pulling away from the old Craine house.
