"After that we had to get rid of the body and leave Chiang Rai.
It must have been late at night by then. My mother and I went out and dug into the ground in the forest and dropped his body there.
Then we went back home, took our stuff and left Chiang Rai. All this happened that very night.
We did not know anyone that much anyway and the police does not care about poor people like us. So it was easy for us to get away."
Tul then asked, "Where did you guys go after that?"
"We did not have enough money. We walked, took the bus, again walked. We slept on the streets and finally after a few days, we came to the forest area where my cottage is situated now.
My mom decided that we should build our own shelter in the middle of the forest and start living there. So we did that. We built the whole shelter by ourselves. It was built with tin all around.
My mother started working as a maid in the closest neighbourhood to earn a living and she sent me to school using that money.
Some days she would only eat breakfast so that she would have the energy to go to work but she made sure I had food in my stomach three times every day. She always put me first. Whatever I have achieved today is because of my mother," Max felt proud talking about his mother. His eyes were glistening again, tears rolling down his cheeks.
Tul gave him a moment and rubbed his palms.
"With her contribution, I got into Chulalongkorn University. It was not possible to make the long hours of journey everyday. So I shifted to Bangkok for my studies and got a part-time job to bear my living expenses. I asked her to use her earning for herself. I wish I'd have earned enough back then so I could give some money to her. She spent her money on me but now that I have all the wealth, I don't have her to spend it on. It kills me inside.
We didn't have any relatives. It was her and I only. So she lived alone there. I lived alone in Bangkok.
I had never been away from her until university. After 1 long year, during the semester break of my first year, I went back home and..." Max broke down into tears and continued speaking in his broken, weeping voice, "I found her dead. The doctor said that she had a stroke. I could not be there for her Tul. I could not be there for her when she needed me the most. My mother died alone and I wasn't there beside her. I failed my mother."
Max broke down in tears. Tul hugged him tight and did not let go. Max cried out in his arms.
Tul consoled him, "You did not fail her. Do you know how proud she would be right now seeing your success in life? She would be very proud. Very proud."
The sun had set. The night sky was dark now. City lights were shining outside, Chao Phraya river in sight. Max's eyes went out again.
Given the background he comes from, little pleasures like a good view from the room makes him happy.
He focused his attention back to the topic. He rubbed his tears off and said, "After her death, I came back to Bangkok and I was determined to finish university and start working again.
I was alone in this world. I had to survive in the harsh reality. I worked hard for 5 years in the advertising industry and made myself financially stable.
Then I decided to move back to where my mother and I lived. I was rich now. So, I broke down our small shelter made of tin and designed a cottage and hired builders to get that cottage built and then I started living there.
It had nothing to do with not liking Bangkok to be honest. Earlier I wasn't ready to open up about my past, so I did not share all this with you.
Anyway, so I just wanted to be close to the memories of my mom, so I moved to the cottage and started working remotely from home," Max finished speaking.
"So you did not kill anyone else. You buried your father's body. And then the next time you buried someone was Boun?" Tul asked to confirm.
"Yeah, but also I did not earn enough money back then to put my mother in a graveyard. So I had to bury my mother in the forest too. I buried her near the back of the cottage.
That was the reason why I never locked my back door. I somehow felt closer to her with that door being unlocked. It's a psychological thing for me."
"Max, I don't know if this is the right time to say this after all that you have told me but I feel like I need to say this to you. You have some personality issues that you need to work on."
