Grace's POV:

The streets are empty as I drive into the night. There's no lights anywhere and I haven't seen a single car. I keep my headlights on the lowest setting, afraid that someone will see me. But the only thing that keeps me going forward is the need to see Sam.

I haven't talked to her since her going away party. And even then I didn't get to talk to her much, with all her family and other friends there. But I haven't even talked to her on the phone since because we've both been so busy. And then we lost connection.

I wonder what happened with her the first day. I was lucky. I was at home when the power went out, then my phone and everything else lost connection, and then the explosions outside started. I was home alone with my cousin Lucy, who's five years old, because my parents left that morning for a business trip. I haven't heard from them since. I keep telling myself that they're okay. I'm sure they are. But maybe they aren't. Who knows, but I keep telling myself they are.

Now I drive on the empty road in the eerie night with Lucy in the backseat. Its not that long of a drive to Sam's, but with no lights and my headlights dim, I'm driving slow. By the time I reach her neighborhood its past ten.

When I turn onto the street leading up to her driveway, I notice something that shouldn't be there, not this time. At the edge of the driveway, a car sits with its engine running and headlights turned up all of the way. Its so unusual I know something must be up.

I pull my car behind a line of trees then turn my lights and car off all of the way. I peer over the steering wheel, my heart beating hard, and wait for something to happen.

It doesn't take long. A few moments later, a guy comes down the driveway and gets into his car, slamming the door. Then he drives away into the night.

I wait a few minutes just in case before I restart my car and pull into the driveway. Then I turn off the engine once again and take a deep breath. I don't know what I'm getting into. I don't know what that guy was doing here. I don't know anything these days. No one does.

I turn to look in the backseat where Lucy sleeps peacefully. I don't want to disturb her so I climb out of my car and lock the doors behind me. I walk slowly up to the front door, listening for anything unusual.

At the door, I peer in through the window and find Rhian, Andrew and two other guys I don't know in the front hallway. When I look closely I find that Rhian is crying. Not hard but enough for tears to roll down her pink cheeks. Andrew looks stressed as his lips move, telling the two other guys, who are intrigued in his story and worried at the same time.

I give up on guessing and knock on the door. All at once they jump and turn toward the door. Once given enough time to recognize me, Andrew and Rhians shoulders drop in relief. The two other guys look confused but I guess they're relieved that its not that strange guy or whatever.

Andrew opens the door with Rhian right behind him. "Grace..." I hug Andrew and he hugs me back. No its not what your thinking. Were not dating. I don't like him like that. Were just friends because of Sam.
"Who was that guy I saw?" I ask when I pull away from him.

"Zack-"

"What! What did he do?" I cut him off and look toward Sam, now realizing why there's dried tears on her face. "Rhian..." I hug her tightly and state at the wall, not knowing what to think.

"He wanted to see Sam. We told him no so he threw a fit and somewhere between that he got to Sam." Andrew says.

"Where is she? Is it bad?" I ask worried. I pull away from Rhian and stand there begging for answers.
