Toby's POV:
Its 7:30 when there's a knock at the door. I really don't want to get up. Sam is sleeping in my arms with her head on my chest and I don't want to disturb her. She had a rough night which included waking up screaming before realizing it was herself.
I take my arms from around her and pull the blanket up to her shoulder. I open the door to find Riley and Connor. I don't say anything. I just wait. I hope this won't be awkward since the last time they saw me was when I was crying because of a girl, which has never happened.
"Hey." Riley gives a soft smile and I just nod my head back. "How's she doing?"
"I don't know. She hasn't said anything." I say.
"Well what happened last night? Did I hear screaming?" Connor asks.
"Yeah. She woke up screaming." I don't really care for discussing this topic at the moment, so I answer plainly.
"Well when she wakes up, can we see her?" Riley asks. "Yeah." I whisper. I step back to close the door but before I can, connor puts his hand on the door and says,"Toby, make sure your getting sleep too okay?' I nod and he let's me close the door.
I crawl back into bed next to Sam careful not to disturb her. A couple minutes later, her eyes flutter open peacefully and they find mine.
"Hey," I whisper brushing hair away from her eyes. "How you doing?" She answers my question by stretching her legs out but moaning in pain. She turns to lay on her back and stares at the ceiling.
"Sammy I'm sorry for this whole thing. I knew there was something wrong with him and I let you go anyway." I say.
She closes her eyes and whispers, "Toby..." But stops. I lean closer to her worried something's wrong. "Yeah?" "I'm gonna hit you if you say your sorry again. It wasn't your fault." I'm happy to know she can still joke around at a time like this.
"Sorry. Oh wait... No sorry. I can't stop saying sorry." I say. She smiles a little and looks into my eyes. "Its okay. As long as I have someone taking care of me. Someone who cares."
"Its not that hard to care for someone like you." She smiles and closes her eyes. "And why not?"
"Because goldfish," I pause. This is it. I'm going to tell her. She opens her eyes and looks at me when I stop. "I love you."
She looks into my eyes and I don't know what to think. Does she like me back or did I just make a fool of myself? Her hand suddenly touches the back of my neck. Her touch makes me calm down a bit since I'm tensed up, but its replaced with butterflies in my stomach. I look into her eyes and before I can doubt myself, I do what I've wanted to do for so long.
My lips crash into hers and she kisses me back. I move my hand to her face and she pulls me closer to her. Its slow and gentle and its perfect; everything I thought of when thinking about our first kiss. I knew it would happen sometime, I just didn't know when. I couldn't hide my feelings for her forever.
It doesn't move anywhere past a gentle and calming kiss. I just savor this moment as she kisses me back. As hard as it is, I break the kiss worried that its too much for her. When I open my eyes, she looks deep into them with her beautiful blue eyes that caught me on day one. The saying the eyes are the window to the soul is right. She has a beautiful soul and I'm happy to know it.
There's a knock at the door and it ruins the moment I've been waiting for for so long. We both jump and I back away from her a little as she pulls the blanket above her shoulder and rolls on her side, but still facing me. I put my head on the pillow next to her as the door opens. We both close our eyes and pretend to be asleep.
